And this guide book for New York City is no exception. I can't remember when I purchased it ......but it was probably around 1990 when I visited NYC on a visit where I was inspecting international Trade Displays. I love the quirky way it has facts like New York is home to millions of Norwegian rats and a section on the catacomb of tunnels under the city ...both those in current use and those disused. One can get lost in just reading the various sections. Stacks of useful and historical information about all sorts of buildings and features of NY...colour coding for restaurants (red), other features such as stores (green). I think if I lived in NY I could use this book on a daily basis...ever finding something new. And I guess NYC is constantly changing anyway, so my 1990 edition is probably pretty useless now...except for things like the history of the Empire States Building etc. I'm not keeping this book now...it's 30 years old and I can't afford the space for it. And, I guess, I can always Google the information or use trip advisor but still rather sad to part with it. I've enjoyed reading and possessing it.....and using it. Five stars...from my perspective. Sophisticated and brutal. Exhilarating and oppressive. Earthy and aloof. A thorough description of New York City might exhaust the largest vocabulary. A city of dynamic contrasts, from the sleek granite powerhouses of Wall Street and Midtown to the charming tenements of Brooklyn and the Bronx, from the Bohemian spirit of Greenwich Village to the old-money atmosphere of the Upper Fifth Avenue, and from the avant-garde art galleries of SoHo to the historic churches of Harlem - New York is all of this and more. Following extensive updating and re-writing post-9/11, this 10th edition of Access New York City is comprehensive, fully updated and filled with revised maps, sidebars and points of interest, offering travelers the best of this citys myriad pleasures, guaranteeing that when they've said and done as much as they can, they'll wave good-bye to the Statue of Liberty while humming New York, New York.
