"Narrator Caitlin Davies brings her talents to this NEW YORK TIMES bestseller. Davies captures the magic of Dennard's exciting world and illuminates each character. While this audiobook is intended for a YA audience, it will keep listeners of all ages enthralled and spooked."- AudioFile

From Susan Dennard, the New York Times bestselling author of the Witchlands series, comes a haunting and high-octane contemporary fantasy, about the magic it takes to face your fears in a nightmare-filled forest, and the mettle required to face the secrets hiding in the dark corners of your own family.

Hemlock Falls isn't like other towns. You won't find it on a map, your phone won't work here, and the forest outside town might just kill you.
Winnie Wednesday wants nothing more than to join the Luminaries, the ancient order that protects Winnie's townâ??and the rest of humanityâ??from the monsters and nightmares that rise in the forest of Hemlock Falls every night.
Ever since her father was exposed as a witch and a traitor, Winnie and her family have been shunned. But on her sixteenth birthday, she can take the deadly Luminary hunter trials and prove herself true and loyalâ??and restore her family's good name. Or die trying.
But in order to survive, Winnie enlists the help of the one person who can help her train: Jay Friday, resident bad boy and Winnie's ex-best friend. While Jay might be the most promising new hunter in Hemlock Falls, he also seems to know more about the nightmares of the forest than he should. Together, he and Winnie will discover a danger lurking in the forest no one in Hemlock Falls is prepared for.
Not all monsters can be slain, and not all nightmares are confined to the dark.

Fast paced, easy read, although I felt it ended a little abruptly. Looking forward to the next in the series. ( )

The concept is great but I pretty much just forced myself to finish this just out of curiosity to finish it. Not sure if it was because I just wasn't in the mood or I was just bored. I felt like it just dragged for me. I ended up giving my book to my daughter, she might like it better than I did. ( )

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan audio for the ARC of the audiobook in exchange for my honest opinion.

I really enjoyed this! This was a really interesting world that was built and, while there was a bunch of different things going on, it didn't feel overwhelming though things did move pretty fast. It was nice that some things got resolved but the bigger plot points will continue on in the series to connect everything. The thoughts and growth of the characters was really enjoyable as well. I am excited for the next in the series and to keep reading!

I really enjoyed the narrator too. She brought a lot of emotion to the reading and really pulled me into the story. I swear I have heard her voice before but she doesn't seem to have read any of the audiobooks I have heard. ( )

From the first page this book was incredibly disappointing. I'm a huge fan of Dennard's Witchlands series and this felt like it was written by a completely different author. There was no finesse at all, and while both are listed as young adult, this book reads much more like a middle grade novel (other than the characters ages). I gave it until chapter nine, and then I realised that I just wasn't committed enough to the story or characters to keep going, especially with a very full TBR right now. I don't know if Dennard decided to try something new with this or something to do with how she put the story together via reader input on Twitter, or whatever the whole story was with that, but this was a horrible disappointment. If this is your first book by her, don't be put off by it and give her Witchlands series a try (or at least read a sample!). ( )

Popcorn literature, that what it is.
A well written quick read which entertains a lot but which is also highly predictable, you know like certain movies, where you lean back in your seat and enjoy the show. (Marvel for example.)

The novel has a few weaknesses, sure I would have liked a bit more character developing/description from some of the side figures, and the tooth clicking is extremely annoying but other than that, yes, I would very much like to know how it is going on and if all my hunches I have turn out to be correct.

Rating wise, I guess it lays more around 3 3/4 but as that is not an option, 4 it is. ( )
