Miss Brooke had that kind of beauty which seems to be thrown into relief by poor dress. Her hand and wrist were so finely formed that she could wear sleeves not less bare of style than those in which the Blessed Virgin appeared to Italian painters; and her profile as well as her stature and bearing seemed to gain the more dignity from her plain garments which by the side of provincial fashion gave her the impressiveness of a fine quotation from the Bible -or from one of our elder poets -in a paragraph of to-day's newspaper.' A highly intelligent and literary read, but ultimately rather dry, despite some interesting characters. The book's main point of interest for me is that it contains my all time favourite literary quote.............. "A man's mind, what there is of it, has always the advantage of being masculine,- as the smallest birch-tree is of a higher kind than the most soaring palm,- and even his ignorance is of a sounder quality'. I am not "well-read" enough to say that this is the greatest book I have ever read, nor scholarly enough to even attempt to review this lengthy novel. As I grow in my reading of literature, I am glad to say that I have read Middlemarch. Well worth the effort. ( )
