A middle grade graphic novel about Marlene, a young girl who stops straightening her hair and embraces her natural curls.
Marlene loves three things: books, her cool Tía Ruby and hanging out with her best friend Camila. But according to her mother, Paola, the only thing she needs to focus on is school and "growing up." That means straightening her hair every weekend so she could have "presentable", "good hair".
But Marlene hates being in the salon and doesn't understand why her curls are not considered pretty by those around her. With a few hiccups, a dash of embarrassment, and the much-needed help of Camila and Tia Rubyâ??she slowly starts a journey to learn to appreciate and proudly wear her curly hair.

Gr 4–8—An Afro-Dominican tween pushes against her family's anti-Blackness and glorification of "good" hair.
Internalized racism is discussed in a way that will resonate with those grappling with it for the first time. Bousamra's candy-colored palette makes this coming-of-age tale welcoming and joyful.

A cute little story about self-love and acceptance in a world that tells you you're less-than. Includes some discussion of intergenerational hurt. The ending felt rushed, with multiple people changing their minds really quickly and others getting totally dropped. ( )

This book is about a young named Yasmin and her journey towards self-acceptance of her curly hair. Her and her mom try to maintain her hair weekly or even daily. Her classmates are very judgmental and make rude comments towards her hair. Until one day she found a hair treatment to maintain her hair and everyone was complementing it and told her how great she looked, boosting her self confidence.

This book would be great for 4-5 graders. It is a graphic novel that can have an some intense moments where students this age can relate to being bullied by their classmates. But learning that you are born beautifully and knowing your importance and who the true people are in your life. This book has great encouragement.

Frizzy could be used in a classroom to teach students about culture and show them the value of family and friends. This book could be used for grades 3rd through 6th to introduce graphic novels and bigger books. In this book, Ortega tells the story of a girl struggling to find confidence in her hair because of bullying and what is "good hair" in the eyes of her mother. ( )

This book is awesome! The pictures are cool, and it teaches a great lesson about being yourself. The main character faces challenges about her natural hair, but the message applies to any kid dealing with bullying about how they look. Great for everyone! ( )
