Fiction. Mystery. Suspense. Thriller. HTML:

A young man is drawn into the dark side of paradise in this haunting and "perfectly crafted" mystery (Grady Hendrix), about the eerie secrets of one Hawai'ian islandâ??and the lengths some will go to keep them.

On a whim, Grady Kendall applies to work as a live-in caretaker for a luxury property in Hawaiʻi, as far from his small-town Maine life as he can imagine. Within days he's flying out to an estate on remote Hokuloa Road, where he quickly uncovers a dark side to the island's idyllic reputation: it has long been a place where people vanish without a trace.
When a young woman from his flight becomes the next to disappear, Grady is determinedâ??and soon desperateâ??to figure out what's happened to Jessie, and to all those staring out of the island's "missing" posters. But working with Raina, Jessie's fiercely protective best friend, to uncover the truth is anything but easy, and with an inexplicable and sinister presence stalking his every step, Grady can only hope he'll find the answer before it's too late.
Perfect for fans of Peter Heller and The White Lotus, and from award-winning writer Elizabeth Hand, a master of crime fiction known for her magnetic characters, seductive prose, and fearless excavations into the darkest corners of our world, comes a chilling and illuminating new novel about a place unlike any otherâ??and the deadly cost of keeping it so.
"Set in a Hawaii so vividly imagined I'm still shaking sand out of my shoes."â??Grady Hendrix
"Twisty and dark . . . easily one of the best thrillers I've read." â??Rachel Hawkins

"This is the perfect book for your summer beach bagâ??an evocative mystery set in a tropical island paradise . . . I was completely enthralled!" â??Jason

The ending was a major letdown. ( )

3 and a half stars. i like the way Elizabeth Hand writes, straightforwardly in all directions. the setting is great: Hawaii with all its contradictions (including its endangered wildlife of very much more than one kind), in the middle of the covid years. that's the book. impossible to detect throughout if the book fits into the horror or mystery genre, but there's a definite flavor of the supernatural. if you have issues with any of that, you won't like the book. because it's about a man who's drifting through life, ambivalent about change but trying to solve the problem of who he is and what he wants, and what really matters, within that setting, and everything he deals with along the way gets viewed through that same lens. i like it. the actual theme is about what's disappearing, and that includes the wildlife end of the human population. but that's the subtle end of what makes it work, the covid epidemic, and the leftover kids on the beach that disappear, and the natural world in which too many species are dying. a worthy subject, almost lost in the mist. me, i would have given the manuscript another pass. i can be ambivalent too. but it's still worth reading. Did not finish. Standard horror story where the ;potential victims are too stupid to leave.

this eventually got better toward the end, but i was never interested in the story or the characters, or felt like really any part of it was very believable. that said, i thought the writing was alright and i appreciated both the incidental queerness of a main side character as well as the way someone's previous sexual trauma was just a part of her past and not who she was. It's a Barred owl, Kaleo, not a Barrel owl.

I understand the desire not to make the central character a macho-man Reacher wannabe, but Grady is a fumbling, clumsy, weak, dolt who second guesses every thought that goes through his three brain cells. Oy vey. And I quite frankly lost track of the two main female characters; they're pretty much interchangeable. The villain isn't very villainous. The crimes aren't gone into with enough detail that you feel any loss about the victims...no one felt any loss, really. It's like a writing exercise gone mad - prompt; write about Hawaiian life and concerns of the locals versus tourists and the impact on wildlife. Oh and don't forget to set it in the COVID pandemic, too. Oh and just how are all those electric cars going to be powered when everyone's driving one in 10 years?? Returning to Audible. ( )
