I wanted to read this for a while and for some time I couldn't find this at either one of the two libraries I regularly go to until a few days ago when I finally picked it up and read it. I haven't read a book revolving around animals in so long, and it's all in poetry to boot since the last book similar to this was called The Way of Dog by Zana Fraillon, I enjoyed that but I read that months ago, still I can see the parallels between those two books. It starts with the main character Odder (I don't think otters have last names) and the book describes what is happening in her life so far, I give credit to the 3rd omniscient POV, I don't see that many verse novels use that narration style so that's unique I suppose. Everything looks fine until when Odder was what I would call hanging out with her friend Kairi or Twyla (It's not that clear in terms of what name I should use since some otters have two names for whatever reason?) A devastating event happened which left Odder in the hands of humans for a second time but there's a flashback to a few years ago when after losing her mother some humans found Odder and took her to a facility which takes up the middle pages of the novel. The descriptions are so fascinating and it made me think in an animal's shoes. Or feet. Or something. Towards the end of the book it cuts to present day and I promise you, there is a high note at the end. P.S. Technically the novel is non-linear? First of all, Sea Otters are my spirit animal. I loved reading this book with the main character of a young sea otter off the coast of Monterrey, California trying to survive. The book is written is free verse which means his adventures are told in few words. These words provide information, facts and scientific viewpoints about caring for the otters. It's a quick read, yet it is a powerful, important story of survival. I love Odder. She is impulsive and longs for connections. She is odd in that she is constantly exploring. Odder, the queen of play: Nobody has her moves. She doesn't just swim to the bottom, she dive bombs. She doesn't just somersault, she triple-doughnuts, She doesn't just ride the waves, she makes them. Odder tries to control herself. She tried to remember what her mom has told her about the sea, its creatures and humans. She has to learn to trust humans, however, to survive. I love that Odder not only survives but thrives. I recommend this book to teachers in primary grades 1-4 to read aloud. Older if kids love otters like me! Kids who can read at third grade level and above with enjoy the story, the map, and the factual information about sea otters. The book is well researched. Another great book by Katherine Applegate. Katherine Applegate, once again, has created a book I adore in "Odder" I honeymoon in Monterey Bay and went to the aquarium. I'm obsessed with sea otters (although it was the Vancouver aquarium where I came home with "Van", our stuffed otter puppet). So I love reading about them, giving them a voice, reading what they "think".... I truly felt the young otter's plight as it gets attacked. As it gets rescued. As it rehabilitates. Written in verse was the best medium to convey all of these events. I will easily be able to recommend this to my patrons. Fans of "The One and Only Ivan" are going to enjoy it. Those who are on the west coast, and very familiar with sea otters, will love it. Fans of conservation efforts will be thankful for the attention paid to it. READ IT sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

Plot Summary: When Odder was a baby sea otter, her mother took good care of her. Her mother always warned her to stay away from humans and sharks. During a storm though, when her mom went to deeper water to get more food, Odder was released from the kelp she was supposed to be stuck in and ended up on the rocks. Odder remembers crying for her mother. Thankfully, she was rescued by humans and brought to Monterey Bay Aquarium, where Odder lived in a pup tank by herself. The humans tried to teach her how to be an otter and eventually, Odder realized what was happening and let it all happen. Finally, Odder got to experience diving in the wild, but returned to the aquarium at night. Until one day, she just left the humans and didn't return. Turns out that Odder loved going up to humans who were kayaking in the bay and she had to be moved to a different area a few times. But Odder loved playing and exploring, especially with her new best friend Kairi. Odder pushes Kairi to be more adventurous, but when they encounter a shark, disaster strikes. Will Kairi and Odder be ok?
Setting: Monterey Bay, CA
Characters:
Odder - adventurous, loves to play
Kairi - Odder's friend in the wild, much more reserved and cautious
Gracie and Holly - older otters who stay at the aquarium, no plans for them to return to the wild, have names not numbers
Recurring Themes: animal rescue, animal conservation, sea otters, endangered animals, friendship, raised by humans, aquarium, adventurous personality, consequences, reintroduce to wild, sharks, danger, names vs numbers
Controversial Issues: none
Personal Thoughts: For a short book in verse, I thought the vocabulary was pretty high. It's easy to get wrapped up in the emotions of the animals because for the most part, the story is told from their perspective. It was a quick read that can easily teach kids about animal rescue and rehabilitation.
Genre: fantasy because parts were told from the perspective of the otter
Pacing: fast, written in verse
