Gaudissart is an able and ambitious commercial traveller, now branching out into Bigger Things- some kind of insurance scheme and newspaper subscriptions.
On his arrival in Touraine- a traditionally-minded community, resistant to crooked new ideas, a canny iocal businessman effects an introduction with an insane retired banker and stands back to watch the fireworks. As the oblivious Gaudissart sells his nonsensical scheme, full of blandishments to the uncomprehending lunatic, he is NOT going to maintain the upper hand...
Brilliant- when on form, Balzac is definitely one of my favourite authors. ( )
