Years ago, empath Elijah Long made a bad decision, and he is still paying for it. He's kept hidden from his abusive werewolf ex for years, but when he wakes in a dark room, cuffed to a wall, he knows he's out of luck. Elora, his psychic sister, will come for him, he just has to endure long enough to give her a chance to find him. Captain Kol Jaecar of Rockshade's Paranormal Investigations Department detests slow times at work, so when Elora wants time off to search for her brother, Kol treats it as if it's a real case and starts an investigation. What he assumed was a brother not picking up when his sister called turns out to be something else. Elijah experiences people's emotions so strongly, it prohibits him from living a normal life. Spending time in the city is out of the question, yet it's where Elora takes him once she finds him. Elijah does his best to keep his distance, especially from the growling man Elora brought to his rescue. Elijah will never make the mistake of getting close to a shifter again. The moment Kol smells Elijah, he knows he's his mate, but how to get close to someone who doesn't want to be near you? The man who abused Elijah is still on the loose, and Kol calls in the entire team to hunt him down. But how are they to keep Elijah safe when he can't be around people? And how will Kol stay sane if he can't touch his mate?… (más)

3.5 stars rounded up

I loved Kol, not so much Elijah. As in the previous book in the series - Soul Eater -, the treatment of the various paranormal characteristics is very good, especially regarding Elijah's empathy and the correlation in the behaviors between werefelines and their equivalents big cats in real life.

There are hints of an eventual story about Ulf; I hope so. ( )

Mind Scrambler is the second book in the ‘Rockshade’s PID’ series. It stars Kol Jaecar, captain of the Rockshade PID, and Elijah Long, the twin brother of Elora who also works at Rockshade. This is told in third person from both Kol and Elijah’s pov.

3.5 Stars

First, I’ll start with the cover. The colors and mood pair well with the first book in the series. I’m guessing the cover model is supposed to be Kol. Somehow, he doesn’t strike me as Kol because throughout the book he’s characterized as big and having a demeanor that is rather frightening and the cover model doesn’t seem like that at all to me. The only thing in common is his dark hair.

The blurb does a good job of explaining the plot. Pretty much Kol wants to be around Elijah because he’s his mate, but Elijah can’t stand everyone’s emotions blasting him. Kol also wants to protect Elijah because he was kidnapped and Elijah’s previous relationship was abusive. Someone is hunting Elijah again and some of the story uses the forced proximity trope which is one of my favs. The relationship didn’t move fast because Elijah was very damaged and didn’t want anything to do with Kol. I think the author handled Elijah’s recovery well especially in comparison to many other authors’ books I’ve read where suddenly the MCs find each other and the damaged MC is cured of his emotional scars. Kol and Elijah’s relationship took time. Kol was extremely patient although he slipped up a few times, like twice he let Elora take off with Elijah when she thought she could look after him. Totally dumb on Kol’s part, because Elora didn’t have the ability like the shifters would have.

I liked Kol's character more than Elijah's. The slow build-up of the relationship was convincing for me, although at the same time frustrating which is probably what Kol felt. By the end I could believe in the two as a couple.

There’s one problem I had with the story and it was the part dealing with finding Beau, the poor shifter under Varg’s control. Nothing was ever mentioned about what sort of shifter Beau was nor how they found him. It was mentioned as an afterthought in the epilogue that ‘they raced against time to find Beau and did find him’. For me, I found that a weak cop-out. The story built up a lot around how, what and who Varg was using, and then at the end readers are only given a name and ‘they found him’. It was a big let-down after the big build-up, so I’m not happy with the epilogue even though Kol and Elijah get their happily ever after. I really wish there had been an exciting scene written about Beau’s rescue instead of what we got.

I don't want to forget to mention the editing. English is not this author's first language, so there are numerous places where the word usage and sentence structure is incorrect. There are more mistakes than in the first book. I completely blame the editors and proofreaders, who are likely paid to do their jobs for not catching these errors. Sure friends who beta can catch some of the errors, but that's not their profession. The final gate-keeper is the editor and they didn't do their job in catching the errors. This is another reason I marked down stars.

In the end, Mind Scrambler did a good job building the relationship between Kol and Elijah. I would call this a paranormal romance with less magical happenings than the first book. That’s why I like the first book more than I like this one. If you’re looking for a paranormal romance book with shifters and a damaged human that reads more like a regular romance since there isn’t much magical happenings, then this book could be for you. I give this book 4 stars because Goodreads doesn’t allow half stars.
