A prime example of 1980s Hollywood, with violence and cruelty masquerading as comic farce. The premise and scattered moments of clarity between characters (not particularly in character, based on the caricature that came before) offer a glimpse into what distinguishes a John Hughes film from the rest. ( ) Beste moment: Als zij aan het eind haar vader gebaart dat dit de jongen is waar zij hem toch over verteld heeft en ze daarom meegaat in de rode sportauto en niet naar de receptie van de bruiloft van haar zus. The beloved romantic comedy's date rape scene provides important context for the Brett Kavanaugh accusations. [...]. Sixteen Candles isn't a college sex romp like Revenge of the Nerds or Animal House. It's a high school love story. It's been celebrated for 34 years for its sweet, romantic heart. Jake, disgusted, comments that "I could violate her 10 different ways if I wanted to," but now that the pure and virginal charms of Sam are in his sights, "I'm just not interested anymore." Instead, he passes her over to Ted (Anthony Michael Hall) — who is listed in the credits only as "the Geek" — reasoning, "She's so blitzed she won’t know the difference." The poor Geek has had no luck with girls, so Jake illustrates his generous magnanimity by installing the Geek in his own fancy car, with his own fancy unconscious girlfriend next to him, and says, "Have fun."
