"What If We Were Somewhere Else is the question everyone asks in these linked stories as they try to figure out how to move on from job losses, broken relationships, and fractured families. Following the employees of a nameless corporation and their loved ones, these stories examine the connections they forgee and the choices they make as they try to make their lives mean something in the soulless, unforgiving hollowness of corporate life. Looking hard at the families to which we are born and the families we make, What If We Were Somewhere Else asks its own questions about what it means to work, love, and age against the uncertain backdrop of modern America"--… (más)

Well written, interestingly conceived, however, this book depressed me so much, I can barely move. ( )

I very much enjoyed reading this collection of short stories. Each chapter is about an employee of a company that was described in the first chapter of this book. Each of the stories was unique, but each at some point referred to the company for which the main character of each story worked. I liked that the stories were very different from one another and dealt with different aspects of each character’s life in a way that no two stories were similar. One of the stories I liked most liked was “A Book of Names, A Spreadsheet” because it told about the employees’ office which brought me back to thoughts and memories of my own office days, particularly the office never being the right temperature, and, more sadly, being laid off. I also was fascinated “The Human” with its look into the future as Michael was reunited with his old girlfriend Sabine when both were basically forced to live on the moon! These were beautiful, well written stories about how life went on with each person who lost a job. I was sorry the stories ended, but enjoyed reading about life after unemployment, although that in itself brought me back to some unpleasant memories which popped up as each character thought back on the challenges that came with loss of a job. I had my own apartment then, and there were things I liked about it, but there were also times it seemed ridiculous, when I’d be sitting around by myself and my mom was sitting around by herself and we were probably both wondering what the point of the separation was while we stared at the wall. (The Old Country)
“I said, ‘Are you asleep?’” she repeated.

“Yes”, he said. (Pivot, Feather)
Man was living on the moon, but Medicare was still a disaster. (The Human)
At the end of every interview, they asked, “What questions do you have for us?” and I recited the things I knew I was supposed to say, How do you measure success in this position? and What would you ideally like to see me accomplish in the first 39-60-90 days? but what I really wanted to say was, Do you think you consider the capacity for kindness a measure of success? and Do you understand empathy as an ideal accomplishment? (More Terrible Ways To Make a Living)
