Join award-winning author Mitali Perkins as she explores the promise of seven timeless children's novels for adults living in uncertain times. Through works by Louisa May Alcott, C.S. Lewis, L.M. Montgomery, Frances Hodgson Burnett, and other literary uncles and aunts, Perkins unpacks wisdom to help us thrive. The stories we read as children shape us for the rest of our lives-- but it's never too late to discover that transformative spark of hope that children's classics can ignite within us. Perkins invites us to explore the promise of seven timeless children's novels, and shows how they provide mirrors to our innermost selves, and open windows to other world. She shows that reading (or re-reading) these books as adults can help us build virtue, unmask our vices, and restore our hope. -- Adapted from jacket… (más)

The author went through 10 children's classic novels and identified 10 virtues each inspired the reader to admire. She argues that even though some of the novels had its faults when viewed under the lens of race and othering, the virtues they promote are universal and moving and the books are still great readings. I read many of the books on her list, and I agree with her that the books are lovable, whether or not they are white-centric. And what makes them lovable is the virtues they espouse and honor. Reading this book motivates me to seek more books that espouse these set of virtues. ( )
