"People spoke about the 'brotherly bond' that men formed when they became soldiers during World War II, but nobody ever spoke about the sisterly bond between nurses of war."
“Girls gather around,” Matron Jones commanded one evening after dinner. “You have probably heard about the difficult and unsuccessful time our troops are facing out in Europe. I am sure most of you are fearful of what the future may hold for us as a nation. I am not going to lie to you, it will be a bumpy road ahead. But I want you to know that you have a family, it is here in St. Angela’s. We will be here to support you whenever and wherever you need us. Either singularly or collectively, we will be there to help. You are not alone, you have our family.
“All you simply have to do is write a letter or telephone us, and we will be there. I understand that many of you have brothers, fathers, uncles, cousins, and friends who are bravely fighting for their country. Unfortunately, not all of them will come back to us…But I want you to know, you have your family here to support you and care for you if the unfortunate news should come to your doorstep. We need to be here for each other now more than ever. It is our job to care for the patients that come in here, but it is also our job to care for one other. Some of you will be moved to other hospitals, some will stay here. Wherever you find a St. Angela’s girl by your side, you have your family. Take care of each other.”
