"Jillian Cantor beautifully re-crafts an American classic in Beautiful Little Fools, placing the women of The Great Gatsby center stage: more than merely beautiful, not so little as the men in their lives assume, and certainly far from foolish. Both fresh and familiar, this page-turner is one to savor!" ??Kate Quinn, New York Times bestselling author of The Rose Code

"Jillian Cantor's shifting kaleidoscope of female perspectives makes F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic tale of Jazz Age longing and lust feel utterly modern. A breathtaking accomplishment."??Fiona Davis, New York Times bestselling author of The Lions of Fifth Avenue

USA Today bestselling author Jillian Cantor reimagines and expands on the literary classic The Great Gatsby in this atmospheric historical novel with echoes of Big Little Lies, told in three women's alternating voices.

On a sultry August day in 1922, Jay Gatsby is shot dead in his West Egg swimming pool. To the police, it appears to be an open-and-shut case of murder/suicide when the body of George Wilson, a local mechanic, is found in the woods nearby.

Then a diamond hairpin is discovered in the bushes by the pool, and three women fall under suspicion. Each holds a key that can unlock the truth to the mysterious life and death of this enigmatic millionaire.

Daisy Buchanan once thought she might marry Gatsby??before her family was torn apart by an unspeakable tragedy that sent her into the arms of the philandering Tom Buchanan.

Jordan Baker, Daisy's best friend, guards a secret that derailed her promising golf career and threatens to ruin her friendship with Daisy as well.

Catherine McCoy, a suffragette, fights for women's freedom and independence, and especially for her sister, Myrtle Wilson, who's trapped in a terrible marriage.

Their stories unfold in the years leading up to that fateful summer of 1922, when all three of their lives are on the brink of unraveling. Each woman is pulled deeper into Jay Gatsby's romantic obsession, with devastating consequences for all of them.

Jillian Cantor revisits the glittering Jazz Age world of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, retelling this timeless American classic from the women's perspective. Beautiful Little Fools is a quintessential tale of money and power, marriage and friendship, love and desire, and ultimately the murder of a man tormented by the past and driven by a destructive longing that can never be fulfil… (más)

Turns the Gatsby story on its head and puts the women front and center, allowing us to see the men through their eyes. Could it all have happened differently, with unexpected desires and motivations? Jillian Cantor convinces us that yes, indeed, it could have, and the result is highly entertaining. ( )

Thank you to #NetGalley.

I read The Great Gatsby so long ago only the name Daisy Buchanan rang a bell and of course Jay Gatsby.

I really enjoyed this book about Daisy Buchanan, Jordan Baker and Catherine McCoy in the 1920s. They were three strong women in their own way. Daisy and Jordan were best friends since they were little and almost like sisters. They had their own lives and I really got caught up in Daisy's life with Jay Gatsby and then Tom Buchanan. Jordan was a strong woman also like Daisy and was a woman golfer which was unusual in those days.

Catherine came into the picture with Daisy and Jordan late in the book but there were chapters about her also. Her sister Myrtle was also in the book and how she also got involved in everyone's lives, starting with Jay and then Tom eventually.

What a tangled web we weave and how it played out was interesting. ( )

While I appreciate the book as a stand alone piece, it is strange to me to add on to the classic that is “The Great Gatsby”. I think it is important to have layered characters, and while this book does that obviously, in TGG it is more nuanced. ( )

I have never read "The Great Gatsby", although I did see the Redford/Farrow movie version a very long time ago. Maybe I should now. I was intrigued by the idea of seeing the events "through the eyes of the women who lived it." I could not decide who was the murderer. The women all had a very good reason to do the deed. I have been following Jillian Cantor since "The Hours Count" published in 2015. I will continue to read her novels. She has wonderful characters who you like to cheer on as well as others you just want to slap! She has an outstanding ability to put you in the scene and get swept up in the drama in the room. ( )

Thank you to Jillian Cantor, Harper Perennial, and Netgalley for the chance to read this advanced copy in return for an honest review.

The Great Gatsby is the story of very rich men who have the world at their fingertips, Beautiful Little Fools is not that story. This is the story of the women who interacted with Jay Gatsby and paid the price.

Jay Gatsby ends up murdered in his pool and a detective has the suspicion that one of the women in his life is responsible.

Daisy Buchanan grew up in Louisville, Kentucky always looking for a way out. On one hot day, she makes the acquaintance of Jay Gatsby when going to visit the Almshouse with her sister, Rose. That day would forever change the course of her life. Jay goes off to war and Daisy deals with the sudden, tragic death of her father and sister Rose. At that moment, she decides the best way to take care of herself and her mother is to marry a rich man who could give her everything.

Daisy's best friend, Jordan Baker, is raised by her father and has a gift for golf. When she goes away for her first tournament she meets Mary Margaret and finds the one thing she has been missing...love. When their secret is discovered, Jordan is forced off the tour and retreats to Daisy's house.

Catherine McCoy and Myrtle Wilson are sisters who are as different as they can be. Catherine is a feminist who wants to help Myrtle get out of her abusive marriage, Catherine is also an ex-lover of Jay Gatsby who asks for his help in freeing her sister from her husband.

Years later, Daisy's marriage is falling apart, Jay comes back into her life and tells her that he is still in love and will do anything to be with her...including blackmail and breaking up her marriage.

I have been a Jillian Cantor fan since The Lost Letter and I had high hopes for this book. All my hopes were exceeded. The most popular historical fictions tend to be set during World War II or shortly thereafter so this was a wonderful change of pace. I enjoyed seeing Jay Gatsby from the perspective of the women he interacts with during the story. I enjoyed reading this book and purposely made time during my day to read it and will be purchasing it for my personal shelves. ( )

I remembered what Daisy had said once, you could be good or you could be happy, but maybe you couldn't be both.
Grief, she told me once when she was talking about Charlie, was forever. An endless, winding river.
She looked at me and saw so much wasted possibility. I looked at her and saw what I never wanted to become: a woman who was trapped.
But why was it wrong for a woman to want pleasure, with nothing else attached to it? Why did sex have to mean anything more for a woman than it did for a man?
I had everything here, everything money could buy. So why did I still feel so sad, and so restless, and so empty?
