Magic has been banished in the land of Syhl Shallow for as long as best friends Jax and Callyn can remember. They once loved the stories of the powerful magesmiths and mythical scravers who could conjure fire or control ice, but now they've learned that magic only leads to danger: magic is what killed Callyn's parents, leaving her alone to raise her younger sister. Magic never helped Jax, whose leg was crushed in an accident that his father has been punishing him for ever since. Magic won't save either of them when the tax collector comes calling, threatening to take their homes if they can't pay what they owe.

Meanwhile, Jax and Callyn are astonished to learn magic has already returned to Syhl Shallowâ??in the form of a magesmith who's now married to their queen. Now, the people of Syhl Shallow are expected to allow dangerous magic in their midst, and no one is happy about it.
When a stranger rides into town offering Jax and Callyn silver in exchange for holding secret messages for an anti-magic faction, the choice is obviousâ??even if it means they may be aiding in a plot to destroy their new king. It's a risk they're both willing to take. That is, until another visitor arrives: handsome Lord Tycho, the King's Courier, the man who's been tasked with discovering who's conspiring against the throne.
Suddenly, Jax and Callyn find themselves embroiled in a world of shifting alliances, dangerous flirtations, and ancient magic . . . where even the deepest loyalties will be tested.<… (más)

I was taken aback, and a bit disappointed, when A Vow So Bold and Deadly was presented as the conclusion to the Cursebreaker trilogy, because it didn’t seem like it was quite the end of the story. But Kemmerer has returned to Syhl Shallow and Emberfall -- albeit four years later and focusing on different characters, which explains why the trilogy ended as it did. In the village of Briarlock, Tycho, the King’s Courier, meets Callyn and Jax, a baker and a blacksmith, and the three of them become caught up in plots of political intrigue.

This is a story with three POV characters and two romances, which means one relationship is much more compelling and nuanced because the reader sees it from both perspectives, and the other relationship seems like less of a good idea, because it's not clear if the romantic interest can be trusted. Which is obviously quite intentional on the author's part but meant I enjoyed some bits of this book more than others.

This was tense and engrossing and I'm interested to see what happens next. ( )

Forging Silver into Stars is my second experience reading something by Brigid Kemmerer, and I regret waiting so long to discover her novels. In this case, having not read the Curseworkers series, I know I missed elements of this story, mainly involving magic in general and Lord Tycho, but I do not think I missed much. It certainly did not prevent me from enjoying Jax and Callyn’s adventures. I tore through this novel and can not wait to read more. ( )

This book was a delight from the start. Jax and Callyn are best friends living in the land of Shyl Shallow. Magic had been banished since Jax and Callyn were little. Callyn’s parents were killed by magic while the injury Jax has couldn’t be helped by magic. When a stranger shows up offering silver to trade messages with someone, the answer is obvious. Jax and Callyn soon worry the messages they’re trading is some kind of plot to overthrow the royal family. Tycho accidentally stops in town when his horse throws a shoe, suspicious of Prince Alek’s visit to town. Tycho befriends Jax, getting more than he bargains while trying to keep on the Royal family’s good side. But is it more than Tycho can handle? This book was fantastic and the pace of the book was perfect - I wanted to keep turning pages to see what happened. I am delighted that this is the first of three books and I honestly cannot wait for the rest to be released. Highly recommend this book, especially if you liked Brigid’s other series the Cursebreakers. ( )

Forging Silver into Stars by Brigid Kemmerer expands upon the universe that was started in Kemmerer’s earlier works as an expansion of the Cursebreaker series. As magic has been outlawed in Syhl Shallow there is a lot of doubt and anger towards the ruling king, a mage smith. In a small town outside of the capital, best friends Jax and Callyn find themselves caught up in a plot against the king, passing notes to his enemies. With their meeting the King’s Courier, questions start to arise about who’s right about the dangers of magic. As a coup comes to a head both Jax and Callyn must decide which side they are on and who they believe.

I read the first three Cursebreaker books: loved the first, was meh about the second one, and thought the third book was better. Ms. Kemmerer has returned to this world four years after the last book. The story focuses on Tycho, Grey's friend from the previous books and now a King's Courier, and two new characters, Callyn, a baker, and Jax, a blacksmith. Callyn and Jax have been friends forever, but both are in trouble with taxes. So when a stranger offers them silver for passing messages, they decide to take advantage to help pay their bills.
I enjoyed this book. I found it a quick read despite its length and fairly interesting. It doesn't tread much new ground as far as magic and the politics of the kingdoms go. Grey is the only mage and people are still suspicious of magic. But I liked Jax and Tycho's story a lot. Their relationship is sweet and they each help the other overcome bad backgrounds. Callyn is a bit more problematic but she redeems herself. It's a good YA fantasy book with the tropes that genre makes use of. ( )
