The great city of Tova is shattered. The sun is held within the smothering grip of the Crow God's eclipse, but a comet that marks the death of a ruler and heralds the rise of a new order is imminent. As sea captain Xiala is swept up in the chaos and currents of change, she finds an unexpected ally in the former Priest of Knives. For the Clan Matriarchs of Tova, tense alliances form as far-flung enemies gather and the war in the heavens is reflected upon the earth. And for Serapio and Naranpa, both now living avatars, the struggle for free will and personhood in the face of destiny rages. How will Serapio stay human when he is steeped in prophecy and surrounded by those who desire only his power? Is there a future for Naranpa in a transformed Tova without her total destruction?… (más)

SO GOOD!! Why oh why must we wait years (or even months) for the next one? (In accordance with my personal rule, I'm not giving this 5 stars until I reread it. But I was tempted to ignore the rule.) ( )

I liked it. Interesting world and characters, and I'm invested in the story. I could use a few less changes of pov, but at least there were no story lines I was not interested in. ( )

Once again, nothing but love for this second installment. My only gripe is that freaking cliffhanger! Ahhh! My favorite characters in fantasy are those who could be good OR evil, and you get both varieties with so much depth that you don't know who is who. This book is that in spades. The characters are so rich they come alive for me in a way that makes me not only root for them, but scream at them when they don't do the "honorable" thing. What more can I ask for in a book?

Same highlights from my review of the previous book, especially the artfully depicted gender-fluid characters. BRAVO!

Definitely read it! ( )

A good story in a well-imagined world. Volume #2 has an ending of sorts. ( )

excellent and engrossing sequel to the first book in this series set in a compelling pre-columbian world. the characters are vivid, the contest now expands to other cultures and city-states, and there's plenty of conflict on every level, along with some unexpected outcomes. my only complaint is about having to wait for the author to write the next (last?) in the series, but already this is one of the very best of the epic fantasy series debuting in the last few years. You have arrived on earth
where your relatives, your kin, suffer hardships, endure affliction,
where it is hot, it is cold, it is windy.
It is a place of thirst, it is a place of hunger,
a place without pleasure, a place without joy,
a place of suffering, a place of fatigue, a place of torment.
O my little one, perhaps, for a brief time, you shall shine as the sun!
