For a children's book, this one was rather nice. I found the writing to be poetic at times, but at other times, it was a bit too descriptive for me. The story was not bad, but perhaps a bit flimsy. Yes, there are several themes: Laura's relationship with her mother and how she feels about the mother's new boyfriend, Laura's relationship with the witch-boy Sorry and his journey back to having feelings, and of course the freeing of Laura's brother Jacko of an evil demon. I guess the different story lines are well done, but particularly the main one is a bit simplistic. Overall, the book was ok, but I'm not going to look for anything else by this author. I suppose I've outgrown this type of book after all... ( )

This book is aimed at an older age group than previous Mahy books I've read as it explores teenage sexuality, family relationships including the fallout from parental divorce and the female protagonist's mother commencing on a relationship with a new boyfriend, and the emotional estrangement experienced by the male protagonist who was brought up by a foster family and beaten by his foster father when the latter lost his job and turned to drink.

All this almost overshadows the supernatural part of the plot whereby Laura Chant (no relation to Christopher Chant in Diana Wynne Jones' Chrestomanci series, although it transpires that she is a latent witch) and her little brother Jacko encounter an unpleasant old man who is the proprietor of a new shop selling trinkets in the shopping area near their house. Laura has woken up with a premonition of something awful happening, which her mother Kate dismisses, but despite this she is unable to prevent the old man putting a picture stamp of his own face on the back of her brother's hand. The stamp cannot be washed off and sinks into Jacko's flesh and soon he is deathly ill, as the old man, a type of vampire, drains off his life force to sustain his own failing and centuries old existence.

No one will believe Laura about the cause of her brother's illness so she is forced to turn to Sorensen, an older prefect from school whom her latent powers have previously caused her to identify as some kind of witch, and to his witch mother and grandmother. Sorensen is cynical, sarcastic and a bit of a user, mainly because his mother had him fostered because he wasn't a girl and she believed he had not inherited her powers, erroneously as it turned out. Given that Laura is only 14 and he is 17, I found his initial overtures, especially groping her when she goes to see him for help, a bit creepy. Laura is a strong character and she does defend her position, but it still made for uncomfortable reading, probably because of the developments which have occurred in society since the book was published in 1984.

I do realise that, if read at the right age, this book would probably be very absorbing as it has a female protagonist who is a strong defender of her brother and who eventually becomes a powerful witch, so the fact that I found the middle of the story to drag when Jacko is in hospital and nothing much is happening, is probably due to my not being the intended readership. Because of that and my reservations about the boy's conduct, especially at the beginning, I can only rate this 2 stars. ( )

Sono rimasta basita da questo romanzo: l'ho preso su consiglio di qualche sito, non ricordo quale - pardon - pensando che avrei letto un romanzo tranquillo, forse un pizzico moralista, ma niente di che.

Attenzione, attenzione, ho la netta sensazione di essermi casualmente imbattuta nell'avo, o in uno degli avi, di Twilight. Già, pare che, oltre ad avere uno stuolo foltissimo di emulatori e scopiazzatori (E.L. James, vecchia volpe!), la signora Meyer abbia pure degli illustri precedenti. Persone informate dei fatti fatemi sapere se c'è qualche notizia ufficiale sulla parentela tra le streghe de La figlia della luna e i vampiri sbrilluccicosi della Meyer!

Comunque, reminiscenze inquietanti a parte, la prima dichiarazione che mi sento di fare su La figlia della luna è: sembra scritto a caso. La Mahy voleva scrivere un romanzo su quella delicata fase nella vita in cui si è in bilico tra il fanciullo e l'adulto. Il risultato è un romanzo in bilico tra l'incomprensibile e il riprovevole.

La vicenda narrata è quella di Laura Chant, quattordicenne strafiga d'antan sotto mentite spoglie. Suo fratello minore viene colpito da una maledizione e la sua unica salvezza sarà Laura, opportunamente trasformata in una strega. Colui che la introdurrà nel mondo della magia è Sorensen, cattivo ragazzo d'antan con una madre e una nonna quanto meno bizzarre.

A differenza del castigato Edward Cullen, Sorensen, o Sorry (!), come lo chiama Laura, non fa altro che parlare di sesso. L'idea che mi sono fatta è che servisse a mascherare una disfunzione erettile. Nella migliore delle ipotesi, naturalmente. Nella peggiore, era soltanto un maniaco.

Infatti, nella sua ansia di descrivere le prime esperienze sessuali (almeno credo), la Mahy fa palpare il seno di Laura a Sorry. Così, a caso. Per quanto è rilevante ai fini della trama, o anche solo allo sviluppo dei personaggi e della loro relazione, potevano pure bersi una limonata fresca. Pensate forse che i due rimuginino su quanto avvenuto? Ma manco per idea! La prima palpatina è andata, passiamo ad altro, va'!

E l'altro consiste in alcune perle di saggezze delle quali avrei francamente fatto a di meno.

”Sono un grande ammiratore di Berkeley, il vescovo Berkeley, conosci? Saprò misurarmi con qualunque molestatore basandomi sulla teoria che essi sono solo delle idee nella mente di Dio: sicché, dato che i molestatori sono probabilmente atei, smetteranno di credere in se stessi e cesseranno di esistere.”

Chissà come se la giocherebbe la Mahy con i preti pedofili... Ah, già! Non esistono. Piazzate questa importante rivelazione tra “i musulmani sono terroristi” e “i comunisti mangiano i bambini”.

[...] e solo dieci giorni più tardi una studentessa del settimo anno, bruttina e grassottella, Jacynth Close, era stata malmenata e violentata tra gli alberi che orlavano la Riserva di Gardendale. A scuola circolavano battute crudeli su quanto doveva essere disperato quel violentatore, ma Laura era inorridita dall'ingiustizia del mondo: se mai un vantaggio c'era, nella bruttezza di Jacynth, doveva essere quello di salvarla da tanta brutalità, e invece non le era servito.

Non so da dove cominciare tanto è il disagio che mi mette addosso questo brano. Il pensiero di Laura avrebbe dovuto essere compassionevole? È rivoltante.

Non paga, poi, la Mahy rincara pure la dose: Ancora non si abituava, Laura, alle nuove, e per certi versi vistose, fattezze femminili che cominciavano da poco a sbocciare sul suo corpo di bambina, ma era costretta ad accettarne vantaggi e inconvenienti, nonché gli obblighi di cautela che le accompagnavano.

La cautela è consigliata a chiunque cammini in una strada buia, deserta e malfamata. Bambine o bambini, ragazzine o ragazzini, donne o uomini non fa differenza, purtroppo. Spero fortemente che la Mahy non volesse dire che è meglio bandire scollature e minigonne.

E ancora: ”Non ti pare un po' tardi, Chant, per far visita a un uomo nei suoi appartamenti?”

Questo è puro stile alla Edward Cullen: ridicolmente antiquato. Vorrebbe suonare inquietante e vagamente minaccioso, come si suppone che dovrebbe essere un cattivo ragazzo dal cuore di marzapane, ma il risultato è risibile.

”[...] anzi, taluni sostengono che perfino l'estremo, rantolante minuto, per doloroso che sia, ci permette di concludere la nostra esistenza nella grazia spirituale.”

Oh, un po' di insana cultura del dolore mi mancava proprio. Sai, Mahy, la gente dovrebbe essere libera di scegliere sul suo fine vita. C'è anche chi non crede nella grazia spirituale e vorrebbe morire con dignità. E c'è anche chi ci crede e vorrebbe comunque risparmiarsi inutili sofferenze. Così, tanto per dire. Da un libro rivolto a ragazzi dagli undici anni mi sarei aspettata un insegnamento alla scelta libera e consapevole, non la solita ramanzina moralista che, in realtà, non insegna un tubo. ( )

A teen girl takes her toddler brother to visit a new curio shop in town, and the creepy old man owner puts his curse mark on the boy, which enables him slowly to drain the life out of him. Laura enlists the help of the cute but strange neighborhood boy - also a prefect at her school - to help, which is good because he's a witch.
Weird, but not necessarily in a bad way. The love story aspect felt a little stodgy and forced, but an okay plot overall. ( )

Took me about a month and a half to read the final five pages because I didn't want it to be over :') ( )
