"It's been one year since sisters Kira and Romy escaped the twisted realm of Whiteland. Desperate and lonely, Kira has no one to talk to, or to convince her that she's not crazy, and that everything in Whiteland really did happen. Worse, Romy remembers nothing and Kira just can't bring herself to make her sister remember. On New Year's Eve, Kira agrees to go with her friends to a nightclub, where she hopes to finally forget everything and start fresh. Instead, she runs headlong into her past. Callum is there. He's alive and his memories of Whiteland are intact. But Callum isn't the only thing that left Whiteland. A huldra has escaped, too, and it only has three things on its mind: punishment, revenge, and hunting down the trio that escaped. Now the Kira, Romy, and Callum are on the run in the real world. Little do they know that the farther they go, the closer they are heading into madness. The only thing worse than going into Whiteland is when it comes out after you."--Inside front jacket flap.… (más)

The premise of the book is interesting and I think the author has a good writing style. Unfortunately, I had a really hard time getting into the story as I felt like I was just "dumped" into the middle. Once I get a better feel for the story the reading experience improved but it took me a long time to finish as I kept putting it down and coming back to it later. Perhaps it is just not my type of book so I'm giving it 3 stars.

3.5 stars “Karliquai” by Rosie Cranie-Higgs is a young adult horror/adventure tale that follows the lives of sisters Kira and Romy. The young women are on the run from their adversaries as they try to deal with their losses and horrific experiences in Whiteland - accessed through an interdimensional rift.

The idea for the story is interesting, and there is plenty of action on the way. Cranie-Higgs offers some wonderful descriptions of places and action, and the reader can easily visualize the scenes. The story is a touch clunky and the plot a little uneven in parts, but this doesn’t detract too much from the story. The characters are believable (at least they seem that way to me – but I am at least twice their age and younger folk may disagree with my assessment).

It wasn’t really my preferred style of novel, but I suspect that it is aimed at a young adult market and would have great appeal there. If you enjoy mythical settings and adventure novels this could be the book for you.
