Another small book offered to the reading public as a free or cheap edition. In 10 short pieces Kees Fens touches upon the genre of humor as he has seen it in his lifetime. This starts with the earliest literary forms such as the "kronkels" ("quips") written by Simon Carmiggelt and Dutch stand-up comedians such as Wim Kan and later Freek de Jonge. Each section is mainly about literature, paying attention to different periods or writers, such as Gerrit Komrij. There is also attention for British humor and the German irony of Thomas Mann. ( )

A very pleasant, chatty little excursion through the many-sided importance of humour in life and literature, from In praise of folly to Van Kooten en De Bie. Lots of examples, of course, and some thoughts on situations where humour fails us and on situations where it is the only thing we have, as in the anecdote that gives Fens his title: Bishop John Fisher on his way to the scaffold asking for a cloak "because he was afraid of catching cold". Sleutelzin uit de synopsis van zijn boekje is: 'De humorist is een zwakkeling, hij kan niet op tegen de grote dingen als God, het schavot en de dood.
