The introduction of a successful vaccine against Covid has produced the unintended side effect of rendering all gunpowder in the world inert. Every weapon from a six-shooter to an atom bomb is now useless. Peace has been forced on the planet by a microbe. However, on a fifty-seven-acre island in the middle of the Doubs River that divides France and Switzerland, a dairy farmer's prized cheese spread has gone into short supply and the world is about to go to war over its loss. The battle for cheese pits the Queen of England against the new, bald President of the United States, and gives the Pope a way out of an embarrassing video. All the while, Boulong, the producer of the world's most desired dairy products, must deal with his pregnant girlfriend, boulders falling from the sky, and his missing son.… (más)

1.5 stars rounded up to 2. What sounded like a great premise turned into, what was for me, one of the worst books I have ever read. Described as a satire, this was one of the most painfully unfunny books I’ve ever read. While there was an occasional chuckle, the rest was just so not humorous. Maybe this wasn’t my style of humor, but I didn’t enjoy this book.

My thanks to Black Rose Writing and Netgalley for a copy of this book in return for an honest opinion. ( )

Satire well-done is an enjoyable read. Satire not so well-done is a slog. This book reminded me in some ways of Catch-22, and I wondered if the author was trying to emulate Catch-22. If so, Ginsburg should go back and think through the process of writing satire.

I gave up on this one, after reading a lot of it. A bit more - or a whole lot more - focus would be good.

Definitely not what I expected, the book mistakes stupid jokes and lame dialogues for satirical humor. While the initial plot idea was intriguing, the book got from bad to worse within just a few pages. My turning point went as far as about 20 percent - after that, I just wanted to get it over with. Any attempt at political satire or cynical comments on nowadays society were drowned in juvenile sex fantasies a never ending parade of childish jokes which made me grimace with pain rather than laughter. Definitely not my kind of book or humor, and now I'm happy to forget about it. ( )

This was my first advanced readers copy received through LibraryThing. I thought it would be a good break to read this between epic fantasy or sci-fi reads. To be honest this one took a bit to grow on me. The humor was there from the beginning but at the beginning it just seemed like it was all over the place and that the author was just thinking, what else could I come up with to add to the mix. But in time the story did indeed grow on me and by the end I truly did end up enjoying it.

This did turn out to be a nice refreshing read between those epic reads. ( )
