This was a tough novel to get into. While some of the prose was great, the overall story bounced around a lot and proved to be a little triffling. Nevertheless, there are still things to be glimpsed here and Mann manages to hold his language together--something not altogether untrue for some of his other works. A decent effort, but falls a little short. ( )

On the face of it, this book doesn't seem to have much going for it. It is an unlikely tale of medieval incest and coincidence, written and translated in an archaic style, and with a moral message. Yet, give it space, and somehow it manages to be strangely compelling. Thomas Mann seems to have that power, even when I lose track of the philosophical points for tens of pages in his longer works. Certainly not everyone's cup of tea, and not really mine, but a refreshing read nonetheless. ( )

Thomas Mann selbst giebt eine kurze Zusammenfassung der Handlung (auf dem Umschlag dieser Ausgabe nachgedruckt): Ein alter Mönch bringt das Leben des Pabstes Gregorius zu Papier von seiner Geburt in Sünde bis zu seiner wunderlichen Erwählung als Pabst, eine altfranzösiche Legende, auch schon von Hartmann von Aue in Versen dargestellt. Thomas Mann möchte, dass wir die Handlung kennen, die Zukunft wird immer auch wieder in der Erzählung selbst angedeutet, diese verschuldeten – unverschuldeten inzestiösen Liebesbeziehungen, ihre Sühne und endlich Vergebung in göttlicher Gnade. So möchte er, dass Spannung nicht in Überraschungen einer unbekannten Handlung aufkommt. Der Roman lebt einzig in der Erzählkunst Thomas Manns und die hält uns gefangen und macht das Lesen ein Vergnügen. Mir scheint es dennoch nicht als eines seiner größten Werke; so zieh ich Lotte in Weimar diesem beispielsweise vor. (III-13) ( )

Surprisingly readable despite the unpromising synopsis; the shrunken Gregory on a rock in the middle of a lake rather reminded me of Voldemort in exile. (Read in a seacaptain's house in Whitby) ( )

This fascinated me in college; I wrote a paper contrasting Mann's treatment with the work by Hartmann von Aue that he based it on. Time to reread. ( )
