The fables of Aesop have become one of the most enduring traditions of European culture, ever since they were first written down nearly two millennia ago. Aesop was reputedly a tongue-tied slave who miraculously received the power of speech; from his legendary storytelling came the collectionsof prose and verse fables scattered throughout Greek and Roman literature. I have no idea which edition I read as a kid. This one was published after I read it, but you get the idea anyway. Enjoyed the stories when I was young. ( )

A nice part about this Kindle edition is the "Life of Aesop", a section that comes after the fables. It gives something about his life, the translation (and modification) of his works. In other words, there is no definitive copy. There were lots of later additions and variations. ( )

Reading them in a book is not nearly as much fun as having them read to you as a kid. But I didn't think they were as good as I remembered anyway. Get an illustrated version for reading with kids. But this version did come free with Kindle. ( )

The preface of the volume by Townsend is interesting & informative. The fables themselves are wonderful. The animals chosen to convey the lesson are perfectly selected. This is a timeless classic. I enjoy the fables more every time I read them. ( )
