Perfect for the holidays! A brand-new heartwarming Christmas novel from the beloved New York Times bestselling author of The Bookshop on the Corner and Christmas at the Island Hotel.  Laid off from her department store job, Carmen has perilously little cash and few options. The prospect of spending Christmas with her perfect sister Sofia, in Sofia's perfect house with her perfect children and her perfectly ordered yuppie life does not appeal. Frankly, Sofia doesn't exactly want her prickly sister Carmen there either. But Sofia has yet another baby on the way, a mother desperate to see her daughters get along, and a client who needs help revitalizing his shabby old bookshop. So Carmen moves in and takes the job.   Thrown rather suddenly into the inner workings of Mr. McCredie's ancient bookshop on the picturesque streets of historic Edinburgh, Carmen is intrigued despite herself. The store is dusty and disorganized but undeniably charming. Can she breathe some new life into it in time for Christmas shopping? What will happen when a famous and charismatic author takes a sudden interest in the bookshop--and Carmen?  And will the Christmas spirit be enough to help heal her fractured family?… (más)

I love audiobooks, however I hated the narrator in this book. It was a English/British speaking lady. It was hard to push through because of her dialect. I will avoid books from this author due to the narrator. ( )

A cute cheesy holiday story. It's a nice December read if you're looking for something light.

The characters felt very one-dimensional and the story felt a bit haphazard - as if, once the story was written, parts were cut out to shorten it. Sometimes the descriptions were lovely, but at other times certain scenes or dialogue were confusing in its brevity. It felt disconnected in a way and the ending felt rushed.

This is the third book by Jenny Colgan I’ve read and all were enjoyable. In this and the two earlier offerings, a young woman experiences an abrupt change from a comfortable but stifling life-style to an alien milieu. The situation is sink or swim, and she doesn’t even know how to dog paddle, but she finds previously unrecognized talents and resources.

In The Christmas Bookshop, Carman loses her dead-end department store job in her small town and reluctantly moves to Edinburgh to live with her successful older sister and her children. Sofia, her sister, arranges for her to help in a failing bookshop for the two months leading up to Christmas. One development follows another, during which Carman attracts the attention of a famous self-help television guru and a studious dendrologist.

Colgan skillfully introduces Carman and entices readers to care about her. The middle chapters sag some and I was impatient for the story to move beyond the subplot with the self-help guru, but the ending provides a satisfactory resolution. ( )

This was a lovely book. The characters were charming and different. Very original plot, with the lead protagonist truly learning about herself and her relationships during the book. I wish there was a follow-up but suspect not. ( )
