Fiction. Literature. Romance. This night not only marked the end to the drought, but also the end to the long-held secret we'd kept hidden under the magnolias. Magnolia, South Carolina, 1980 Austin Foster is barely a teenager when her mama dies giving birth to twins, leaving her to pick up the pieces while holding her six siblings together and doing her best to stop her daddy from retreating into his personal darkness. Scratching out a living on the family's tobacco farm is as tough as it gets. When a few random acts of kindness help to ease the Fosters' hardships, Austin finds herself relying upon some of Magnolia's most colorful citizens for friendship and more. But it's next to impossible to hide the truth about the goings-on at Nolia Farms, and Austin's desperate attempts to save face all but break her. Just when it seems she might have something more waiting for her?with the son of a wealthy local family who she's crushed on for years?her father makes a choice that will crack wide-open the family's secrets and lead to a public reckoning. There are consequences for loving a boy like Vance Cumberland, but there is also freedom in the truth. T. I. Lowe's gritty yet tender and uplifting tale reminds us that a great story can break your heart...then heal it in the best possible way.… (más)

This was a tough one for me honestly. I felt it was a great book and I normally enjoy southern fiction; however listening to the audiobook…the narrator didn’t bring this book to justice and I kept dozing off and becoming very distracted by her voice.

This would be a much better book to only read in my opinion. ( )

Audiobooks.com offered this as a free VIP selection and it was a good story (a little too heavy on the secret the family hides) and the narration was very good. Thanks for a wonderful listen.

Austin’s family is bigger than life, but so are their problems and their friends and neighbors. There is much to admire in all the main characters, but they all seem to “hide” their own personal stories. At the core of the story there is a tiny church on a tobacco farm with a wonderful “preacher” with great love and respect for all, but who is struggling with a very large problem. Secrets abound, but love finds a way. Have now listened twice - even better the second time around.

This night not only marked the end to the drought, but also the end to the long-held secret we’d kept hidden under the magnolias.

Thank you to the author and A Novel Bee (FB) for this book.

A powerful book about mental illness and a big family of 7 kids and their "Pa" living in SC in the 1980s. Their mother died while giving birth to one set of twins (there are another set). Their father is too busy handling their tobacco farm and it's up to Austin at the young age of 13 to take care of all of the siblings, doling out their chores on the farm, where they all worked, making sure they are fed, etc. What I love is that every child was named after a city that their mother wanted to visit.

This book was a hard one to read with their father falling into a funk (later diagnosed as manic depression -- probably due to his wife's death), but yet Austin kept it going and then there was Vance, the mayor's son who always loved Austin and never gave up on her but yet she kept shunning him saying she's not his type because of who their family is.

There are other citizens in this community who went to their church where "Pa" preached every Sunday and who ended up loving all these kids and came together when things got rough.

As you know, I love epilogues that go into the future and this one was one that I really enjoyed reading about. Some things surprised me that's for sure. ( )

Under the Magnolias by T. I. Lowe is a powerful story of a young teen who is left motherless with several sibling and a farm to take care of while her father struggles with the loss of his wife. This story takes place in the 1980’s that spans several years and shows the devotion Austin has to keep her family together despite the sacrifices and hardships she endures.

This is such a good book. It is well written and descriptive. The story focuses on Austin but gives great detail for the other members of this family. This story shows the stress and destruction mental health can put a family through. It also shows the strong devotion Vance had toward the family and how he was always there for Austin when terrible things happened. This is not the easiest book to read because it is so realistic and there are so many people who, like Austin’s family, hide what is really happening and do not seek help.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the Tyndale House Publishers through NetGalley, this is my honest review. ( )

This is an eye-opening, tender, thought-provoking novel that introduces Austin Foster, a remarkable thirteen-year-old facing an unimaginable task. Readers soon find out the determination and strength of this amazing young lady who steps up to the plate after tragedy strikes and selflessly tries to fill in the gap for her family, and their tobacco farm.

Here's a peek at what Austin thinks, “Mama wasn’t there to protect us from Pa’s dark seasons anymore. A hard question followed that hard truth: Would I be able to step into her role and protect my siblings from him? Whatever was going on with Pa went beyond normal grief, but I was too young to understand what exactly it was. With Mama’s shield no longer in place, I fully experienced the shadows that fell from Pa’s presence for the first time. It was a murky place, dim with very little understanding.” “Protecting my siblings and my father from himself was top priority, so what I wanted rarely mattered.”

I wholeheartedly agree with this note from the publisher…”I’m writing this letter because in a world of “too many books and too little time,” I am convinced I have something very special to offer that deserves your time and attention: Under the Magnolias by T.I. Lowe…is fresh and stunning in its own way, this novel will remind you of some of the great Southern coming-of-age novels like The Secret Life of Bees, Saving CeeCee, Honeycutt, and When the Crawdads Sing….T.I. Lowe is a rare, unpretentious, natural-born storyteller.”

The author pens an astonishing, heart-breaking yet hopeful story that will grab your heart and not let it go long after you close the book. There are tragic moments mixed with family and community love and humor. There are moments to cry and moments to cheer. Vance Cumberland and Austin Foster are my heroes as they fight the good fight, then remember what Pa said, “Fighting hate with hate only produces hate.”

This book would work well for your next book club pick as it’s rich in character and story. There is so much to discuss.
