Comic and Graphic Books. Young Adult Fiction. Young Adult Literature. HTML:

From Julie Murphy, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Dumplin', comes the first in a two-book origin story of Faith, a groundbreaking, plus-sized superhero from the Valiant Entertainment comics.

Faith Herbert is a pretty regular teen. When she's not hanging out with her two best friends, Matt and Ches, she's volunteering at the local animal shelter or obsessing over the long-running teen drama The Grove.

So far, her senior year has been spent trying to sort out her feelings for her maybe-crush Johnny and making plans to stay close to Grandma Lou after graduation. Of course, there's also that small matter of recently discovering she can fly....

When the fictional world of The Grove crashes into Faith's reality as the show relocates to her town, she can't believe it when TV heroine Dakota Ash takes a romantic interest in her.

But her fandom-fueled daydreams aren't enough to distract Faith from the fact that first animals, then people, have begun to vanish from the town. Only Faith seems able to connect the dots to a new designer drug infiltrating her high school.

But when her investigation puts the people she loves in danger, she will have to confront her hidden past and use her newfound giftsâ??risking everything to save her friends and beloved town.… (más)

Sooooooo as I was reading this book I was thinking, it's like I jumped right into the middle of a story I'm supposed to know about but I don't, and it's a little confusing. Turns out, that is correct! If I was paying attention I would have seen the subtitle that said Origin Story and realized this chapter book is based on this series of comics. I don't mind admitting my complete foolishness being a librarian who missed such an important detail, because I was distracted by my eagerness to read a new Julie Murphy book and didn't care about anything besides the fact that Julie Murphy wrote it. I would highly recommend reading the comics first, then you can enjoy Murphy's engaging, warm, writing style that sweeps you right up while having more of a clue about the plot than I did. And then, if you enjoy her style and the way she brings characters to life in all of their flawed, lovable glory, read everything else Julie Murphy has written.

The story wasn't anything I expected and surprised me multiple places along the way. It starts like a simple YA rom-com with a little paranormal thrown in but then takes a twist and turns back on itself, Only to wind in and out between rom-com and dark adventure. I laughed out loud many times and grew to love characters I hated and hate characters I'd once loved. The author really took me on a ride. ( )

Oh my god. This was sooooo good! I never thought I would see myself represented as a superhero, but turns out I was mistaken! ( )

This was perfect in so many ways: the right amount of everything, from development to plot twists to the romantic arc. I loved Faith. ( )

I like this book for more than the cover, although I do really enjoy the cover. I think Faith is a very genuine narrator, and her adventure is unique to the world Murphy set up. I really like the path she takes and her choices place her as a very good, intelligent person.

This is the first book in a duology, so the next book is well set. The ending was satisfying, but still left enough mysteries for Faith to figure out in the next book. This is just as good, if not better, than Dumplin. ( )
