Title: Outlaw Country (A Smoke Jensen Novel of the West #3)
Author: William W. Johnstone and J. A. Johnstone
Pages: 352
Year: 2021
Publisher: Pinnacle
My rating: 5 out of 5 stars.
Outlaw Country is the third tale in the Smoke Jensen novels of the West series. Smoke Jensen: The Beginning shares Smoke’s younger years as a farmer and his journey to learn how to live in uncertain times. In the second book, This Violent Land, Smoke’s father returns home from the war to find out that his wife is dead, and his only daughter has run away. Now, Smoke is in his later years and traveling across the ocean with his wife Sally to visit Paris. Smoke feels more at home on his ranch called the Sugarloaf and on the back of a horse, yet Sally wanted to travel and so he is on his way.
The first part of the book brings readers who haven’t read the other two books up to date with what Smoke has experienced. The rest of the story focuses on the adventures Smoke and Sally have had as they share them with a fellow traveler, who is a journalist. Both Smoke and Sally relate different dangers they faced and how through it all their marriage has thrived and endured.
For fans not familiar with the character or read any of his other books, you’ll enjoy getting a telescopic view. For those familiar with Smoke and are avid readers of his tales, they will love remembering the wild life Smoke and Sally have lived. The ending was very touching and nostalgic, though I don’t think readers need fear that there won’t be any more Smoke Jensen western tales. I am thinking we have yet to read all that this fictional character went through in taming the West and building a future.
