Excerpt from The Novels and Stories of Ivan Turgenieff: The Jew, and Other Stories Andrei kolosoff, Turg nieff's first short story, was constructed - said the Russian critics strictly in accordance with the Views which, at that epoch were regarded as new and just. The author, then a government official, employed most Of his time in reading George Sand's nov els, and the traces Of her influence are perceptible throughout this story. One critic Obj ects that the author's View of his first hero is - in spite Of its poetical coloring - unnatural, illogical, inhuman, unfaithful to reality, and that it does not conform to the character of kolosoff as portrayed in the story. He maintains that no one would have tol erated the remarkable and incomparable koiosofl' in ordinary healthy life, because he was ah normal; and his abnormality gave rise to the same thing in all the other characters of the story.
