Gentle and strange and drawn with detailed tenderness, "Alone in Space" is such a solid introduction to Walden's her work and creative mind. There were little bits here and there (primarily in "The End of Summer") that I feel could have used just a nudge more explanation in order to more easily follow the story, but overall a great collection. ( ) Alone in Space is a collection of short comics by cartoonist Tilly Walden. I don’t think I fully understood The End of Summer… I was getting the boys confused. My favorite was I Love This Part. It was a super cute, first love and heartbreak type of story. I really enjoyed seeing the different styles of drawing and art Walden has had over the years. I enjoyed pretty much all of them to some degree. I’m tempted to knock off a star based on the excessive number of dream sequences and references to Little Nemo in Slumberland (strong dislike!), but this is a collection of Tillie Walden’s early works and here's hoping she has gotten that stuff out of her system for going forward. In addition to collecting three of her previous books -- The End of Summer, I Love This Part, A City Inside -- the back end is full of short strips, some produced when she was as just 16. They range from autobiographical to experimental, school assignments to just for funsies. A decent collection of uneven odds and ends from a talented creator on the rise.
In this dreamlike collection of previously published material, cartoonist Walden presents a series of thoughtful tales about home, belonging, and powerful emotion. Jumping easily from genre to genre, this volume features the self-contained stories of a chronically ill boy and his family in their mansion during a yearslong winter, two closeted girls negotiating first love, and a young woman's experience of giving up her supernatural life in the sky for a relationship on Earth. The collection also includes a number of shorter pieces created during Walden's young adult years. Exhibiting a style that references Studio Ghibli and Winsor McCay, Walden displays an encyclopedic knowledge of the genre that gives depth to the not-quite-our-reality in which her characters find themselves. ...
