"Ed Garrison has it all-a successful basketball career, a great relationship with his kid brother, the best dog a guy could ask for, and a supportive family. With a full-ride scholarship to Berkeley and summer vacation being the only thing standing between him and his future, Ed feels invincible. But as high school comes to an end, everything falls apart when his mother leaves his father for a woman 3,000 miles away; leaving behind a broken home in the wake of her absence and betrayal. Ed can do nothing while his humiliated father turns to liquor and work, and his brother throws away his future for illegal substances and crime. Not even the dog stuck around to watch. Soon, Ed is lashing out too: he turns down his scholarship and alienates himself from his fractured family to start a new life on his own. Alone and confused, Ed switches his major to journalism, trains for a marathon, and adopts a puppy, all in attempts to fill an unexplainable void in his life. But as the years pass and this new chapter is also riddled with distrust and regret, he fails to maintain the relationships that matter the most. Ed now has no choice but to reckon with his past mistakes as his dreams of a basketball career are shattered and his family continues to crumble"--… (más)

This is a unique one. There are so many take away moments in this book. You have the brothers relationship that was great, then not, then hopeful. Also, the one with his mother whom he blames for destroying the family when she left his dad for another woman. The author paints a good picture of the scenes to where you can actually see the game played or the ruined down town he lived in. This is not my typical type of book but it was a good read. ( )

Read, in english: and that's why I put the review in english. It's a book arrived via Librarything, and I like to thank you again and again.
It took a little while to be read, and it generated discussions with Lybrarything: but I read other books in the same time, and reading in a foreign isn't so easy.
Anyway, the book is good, perhaps too dishomogenous; the dog disappears in one chapter, mother disappears in one chaper and reappears in another one (the last one) and there isn't so much about university. Dog is present yes and not, love is present (perhaps too much) and life shouldn't be so difficult.
Anyway, a good book to recover again my english. And thanks to Lybrarything for the gift!!!!! ( )

Very realistic coming of age story set in the late 90s. ( )

I was able to read this ebook for free with the Early Reviewer program from LibraryThing. Thanks to Ooligan Press for sending it.

I believe we all had those times in life where we are so focused on ourselves and our pain that we can not see anything else and then we stop and look around and everything we did during that time comes crashing. - This is how I felt reading this book. It's so well written that we can feel how Ed does at every single moment and we all can relate to it at some point or another.
It's hard to grow up, specially when a lot of things (good and bad) happen at the same time.

My congratulation to the author J.T.Bushnell for an amazing first work. ( )

Disclosure: Book review part of the LibraryThing Early Reviewers.

The Step Back is a book in navigating the life of Ed in college and working through the divorce of his parents. What I appreciated about the book was that this was a great flow of book, where it was easy to follow along and not get confused as to what was happening. The hardships of being at college but also dealing with a huge change was something that I thought could be very relatable. It made me wonder as to using this book in a reading group or counseling group for young adults going through these type of changes.

One thing I would note is I was just confused as to what year this book was set in. I could have missed it, but I was unsure if this was a modern book or more set in the 80's/90's.

Overall, I think this is a great read that can be used in a specific type of group setting. I would not be sure as to having this as a classroom read, but I would think it could be a book for a small type of group for young adults. ( )

This should be mandatory reading for folks in their second semester of freshman year in college. So many great lessons about learning about yourself, home, family, and relationships. Especially great is the demonstation of the lesson that it isn’t necessarily too late to make things right.
