A Piece of Home is about a little boy named Gregor whose family is moving from Russia to the states. To remind him of home he brings along his favorite blanket. Gregor is nervous to meet his cousin Elie in America. When Gregor first meets his cousin, his cousin stares back at Gregor and his blanket with curiosity . I feel that this book would comfort young children who are getting ready to move. The book also shows that no matter where we come from we all have things in common, just like Gregor and his cousin. This book shows the trip Gregors' family takes from Russia to America. He was subconscious about taking his blanket from Russia over because he feared rejection of his cousin who is the same age. In the end, Gregor and his cousin ended up sharing the exact same blanket. The illustrator did a great job of making the characters realistic, which makes the reader feel a deeper emotional connection, as some students may have moved before. ( )

When Gregor and his parents move from Russia to America to be closer to family, he is anxious to leave behind everything that is familiar to him. He is only allowed to choose one special item to take with him. He chooses a blanket his great-grandmother made and questions his decision the entire journey. His concerns subside when realizing it wasn’t the first time the blanket had been brought to America as a memory of home.
Moving to an unfamiliar place, let alone a whole new country, is nerve-racking for anyone. This would be a relatable story for any child who has moved to a new place, and comfort them to know that being a little nervous is perfectly normal.
Although this is a sweet story about family and what reminds of us home, it lacked a certain amount of sentimental emotion to me. ( )

During the journey to America, Gregor also journeys through several emotions about the move. Although going to a place closer to more family, Gregor was scared and worried. He had loved his home and as the plane got closer to his new home, his worries grew. Before leaving, each family member picked one item to take to America. Not knowing it at the time, Gregor chose an item that would bring him and his family overseas much closer. His worries subsided once the story behind this item was brought to light. A great story to show how a memory of love can rekindle a relationship that hardly ever began. ( )

Similarities in kids of the same age is usually easy to find which is why I really enjoyed this book. I liked how his cousin used things that they were both interested in to make him start to realize that they aren't that different at all.
