Just like Maui revealed, this is a terrific travel book. I read the entire thing (well, most of it) on the plane ride over and the girl in the row I was sitting with also was reading it at the same time. The same stuff that rocks in the Maui book is here - fair recommendations, good suggestions on where to go and what to avoid. It doesn't feel like a commercial and is funny at times. I had an incredible time with my partner in no small part thanks to this book! Thanks to Eric Haight for lending to me. ( )

Travel books can sometimes be a tedious read, but there is a reason why this book is the top-rated book on the Big Island on Amazon. Reading this feels like talking with a friend. The tone is personable, with jokes and asides, plus lots of practical knowledge you don't see elsewhere--like when the winds pick up, what side of the plane to sit on when flying into Kona and Hilo, where to eat, how to access remote black beaches, etc. As an author, I need these kinds of details for the novel outline I'm working on--and for the research trip I'm planning as well. Plus, their website offers a wealth of supplemental material. I'll be buying their book on Oahu next! ( )

You will not be the only one toting this book on the Big Island, guaranteed! I do have to add that while we were in Hawaii, the news reported an increase in the rate of visitor deaths over previous years. One of the possible causes cited is people reading about off-the-beaten-path locales and adventures, which this book does include. However, the authors also advise caution throughout the book. You don't have to do everything the book tells you about, so travel wisely and safely! ( )

Even though my husband and I are from Hawaii and didn't leave till middle age we have used this series when we go back and have found both this book and the Ultimate Kauai book to be informative and accurate. We used it to show friends around both islands and it was great. I saw someone's comments on the internet that this was a horrid book and the people who lived in Hawaii hate it. I did not hear that comment from any of our friends or family.
Anyway I really think this book is great and gives you a good idea of things to see and do, THAT EVEN US LOCAL PEOPLE REALLY DIDN'T KNOW OR THINK ABOUT. Granted he is irreverent and flippant a bit, but it fits the book. Also we have found his places to stay to be right on.
