This is one of those 50/50 types of books for kids. It can be taken either way. It's a story about Donald Duck being in competition with this other duck character called Gladstone Gander over what to buy Daisy Duck for her birthday.

Throughout the story Gladstone always seems to be one step ahead of Donald. Donald was broke poor and he thought Gladstone was rich. This is a good lesson to teach kids. Appearances can be deceiving.

Donald ended up following Gladstone all over town and being jealous at all the things Gladstone was looking at for Daisy's birthday. Donald was trying to keep up with the Joneses instead of making his own mark.

Throughout this entire ordeal, Donald was griping about how lucky Gladstone was.

In the end, it was Donald's nephews Hewey, Dewey and Louie, who knew what to get Daisy. And they got it on behalf of their Uncle Donald. So when Gladstone came with his present which was supposed to be a romantic dinner for two at Chez Swann, Daisy could not be bothered. She was too in love with the gift the boys got her, which was a brand new Kitten.

She sent Donald and Gladstone to dinner at Chez Swann while she took care of her new kitten. It was there that Gladstone was envious and admitted that some ducks have all the luck...meaning Daisy and not himself.

I don't know. This book focuses on materialism and really does a poor job of conveying any type of moral to this story. The adult reading it to a child would have to pull out bits and pieces of morality in order for any lesson to be really learned here. Otherwise, if the child was reading it on their own, they really wouldn't get the fact that Donald should have been a better boyfriend, Gladstone should have been a better boyfriend, Daisy shouldn't really be dating two men. And that the only one that truly knew Daisy and what she would want were Donald's nephews.

Yeah, none of that was conveyed. So I gave it 3 stars. It gets 3 because it is in the Disney style, there is a happy ending and kids would get into the characters...but other than that there is really nothing further to grasp on here. ( )
