The second novel in the internationally bestselling Sister Bells trilogy, an epic, moving, and gloriously told historical novel following The Bell in the Lake, an Indie Next pick The second novel in Lars Mytting's powerful and compelling Sister Bells trilogy, The Reindeer Hunters is both a sequel to The Bell in the Lake and a stand-alone novel. Set again in fictional Butangen, Norway, where the story of the conjoined twin sisters Halfrid and Gunhild Hekne provides the mythical and mystical undergirding, The Reindeer Hunters unfolds around the extraordinary tapestry that portrays the sisters' vision of Doomsday. After their death in 1613, the tapestry was given to the village church and lost at some point over the centuries. The year is 1903. Twenty-two years after the events of The Bell in The Lake, Astrid Hekne's son, Jehans, is now a young man. Driven out by his family, he lives on a homestead in the mountains near the village of Butangen, where he relishes the freedom of his life apart, fishing and hunting for his livelihood. One August morning, Jehans kills a massive reindeer and at the same moment encounters an enigmatic hunter . . . At the new church in Butangen, Pastor Kai Schweigaard is living with the consequences of his past betrayal--arranging the dismantling and sale of the stave church--including deaths and the loss of the church's mystical sister bells. Kai becomes obsessed with finding the ancient tapestry woven by the conjoined sisters in whose memory the bells were cast, with the hope that the tapestry will bring him redemption. Despite the unraveling legends from the past that continue to haunt these people, they must figure out how to look to the future. A magnificent story about love, sorrow, and courage, as well as taming waterfalls and the first flash of electric light in the village night, The Reindeer Hunters is a grand and thrilling novel about what it takes to live in and embrace a new era.… (más)

A follow-up to "The Bell in the Lake" and equally as good or better. Set in the small town of Butangen, Norway in the early 1900's, the story centers around two men who meet each other while hunting reindeer and happen to shoot the same reindeer at the same time. Are they brothers? Jehans, the one twin of Astrid Hekne, lives a rebellious life hunting reindeer although having been educated by Pastor Kai Schweigaard.

The story still centers around the two bells that represented the co-joined twins in the 1600's. One bell in the lake and the other taken to Dresden Germany when the stave church was dismantled and moved there.

All of the characters in this book are memorable: the mean-spirited current Henke landowner, the grumpy old-fashioned housekeeper of Pastor Kai, the uneducated but smart hard-working wife of Jahan, Kristine. Life during this time is hard and WWI plays a part.

The characters are memorable, the plot interesting, the setting believable, and the writing clean and sharp. Loved the story - one I would reread after rereading "Bell" ( )

I was THRILLED when this popped up at the library because I adore The Bell in the Lake and couldn't wait to get more from Mr. Mytting and more about this community. What I liked about Bell was the lore about the the church bells and the Hekne sisters. This introduces the story about their weavings, and I was fascinated. I didn't get into the Jehan story at first, but finally warmed to it. I am amazed at what Mr. Mytting knows about, and can write interestingly about, hydroelectricity and dealing with rocky soil and weaving and hunting. I wasn't as captivated by Hunters as I was by Bells, but as soon as I finished, I wailed 'I'm going to have to wait another two years for book 3 to be translated.' I like this passage: I try to let reason be my guide. But the older I get, the more I doubt everything." And this is fabulous: "A path was cut through the forest, tall poles were erected across the Losnes Marshes, and the telephone number Butangen 1 went to the parsonage. Not long after, Butangen 2 went to Gildevollen. The strong odor of creosote that came from the poles lasted for years and lodged itself in the memory of every villager, so whenever they passed one later in life, they thought, here, right here, it smells of telephone. But my favorite passage is: "Always the hope. The fisherman's prayer. Lord, give me a trout so big that I won't have to lie about its size." ( )
