glajohnson: I really liked the main character in this book. I love that she was an overweight, middle-aged woman who was still trying to decide who she was. I think it was interesting for her to explore the "what if" of her college fiance and the life she might have had with him. I liked the way her thought processes changed throughout the book until she realizes that the way she was in college was not the true self that she thought it was.… (más)

I like Anne Tyler. The main character here is Rebecca, a long-time widow who in her 50’s thinks she has lost her true old self. She looks up her old boyfriend and finally discovers why she didn’t stick with him originally. Her rambling, interesting family is well-drawn by Tyler. We are presented with gently humorous situations and vivid character sketches. Set in Baltimore, a row house where the bottom floor is rented for parties. ( )

I think I read this book several years ago as I recognise the cover. But obviously it didn't leave much of an impression so I can only give it two stars. ( )

Another enjoyable read from this author. Initially I didn't think it would engage me but then I could feel a connection to Rebecca as she juggled family commitments with hosting parties in her late husbands family home.
Rebecca was swept off her feet by the charming Joe Davitch, widowed father of three daughters. She gives up her college studies to run his family and she is happy but when Joe is killed in a car crash, she is left to raise the girls and their own daughter, as well as take over The Open Arms.
Thirty years later she starts wondering if this is really her life. It is so far removed from what she had envisioned for herself, a once scholarly, serious student with an equally scholarly sweetheart. She wonders what became of Will. Is it too late to change who she has become?
I also discovered that I read this book 16 years ago but I have absolutely no memory of the story line. Now that's a worry! ( )

This is my 12th Anne Tyler book. She is a master of writing about quirky main characters who are at some crossroads. Tyler does this as well as anyone. She deal with families and has a way of touching on every type of situation. This story deals with Rebecca Davitch a 53 year widow who married young and ended up with 3 young step daughters and one of her own. Her husbands early death led her to get caught up in the Davitch family business(hosting parties in their unique home). We meet Rebecca when she is questioning her life and wondering how it might have turned out had she made different decisions. Something that we all deal with. If you have never read Tyler than this is a perfect book to start with. She is funny and never boring. If you like her then you will have the joy of looking forward to reading all her great books. weak novel

‘Once upon a time,’ the story begins, ‘there was a woman who discovered she had turned into the wrong person.’ . . . With Rebecca Davitch, Tyler has created a character who is brave enough to look back on her life and to imagine herself making different kinds of choices. Brave enough to wonder what honesty looks like, whether there is ever really a single distillation of self that is unshakable and true.
