"Flora Dane is a victim. Seven years ago, carefree college student Flora was kidnapped while on spring break. For 472 days, Flora learned just how much one person can endure. Flora Dane is a survivor. Miraculously alive after her ordeal, Flora has spent the past five years reacquainting herself with the rhythms of normal life, working with her FBI victim advocate, Samuel Keynes. She has a mother who's never stopped loving her, a brother who is scared of the person she's become, and a bedroom wall covered with photos of other girls who've never made it home. Flora Dane is reckless.. or is she? When Boston detective D. D. Warren is called to the scene of a crime--a dead man and the bound, naked woman who killed him--she learns that Flora has tangled with three other suspects since her return to society. Is Flora a victim or a vigilante? And with her firsthand knowledge of criminal behavior, could she hold the key to rescuing a missing college student whose abduction has rocked Boston? When Flora herself disappears, D.D. realizes a far more sinister predator is out there. One who's determined that this time, Flora Dane will never escape. And now it is all up to D. D. Warren to find her"--… (más)

Find Her
3.5 Stars

Upon arriving at a crime scene in which the victim was burned alive, Detective D. D. Warren is surprised to learn that the perpetrator is actually a young woman defending herself against a vicious rapist. But the more D. D. learns about Flora Danes, the more she suspects a case of vigilante justice. When Flora disappears, D. D. realizes that the hunter might just have become the hunted.

Lisa Gardner has a tendency to write problematic protagonists. Sometimes this works (Tessa Leoni) and sometimes it doesn't (Adeline Glen). In this case, it is successful as Flora Danes is one of the most damaged characters Gardner has produced, yet she still manages to resonate and evoke sympathy and empathy.

The majority of the book focuses on Flora's experiences at the hands of a sadistic kidnapper, rapist and killer. While these are presented in 1st person POV, which makes reading about her suffering more difficult, it also emphasizes her courage and resilience. Although the identity of the villain is rather obvious, the climax and resolution are exciting and satisfying.

With regard to D.D., she has grown and changed over the series and it is good to see her so comfortable with her husband and son. Suffice it to say that Alex has the patience of a saint when it comes to his wife and Jack is simply gorgeous.

Overall, a good addition to the series. ( )

Lisa Gardner has really found her mojo. Boston Detective D.D. Warren is called to a scene where a young woman has managed to immolate a rapist before he could rape her. It turns out that the victim Flora Dane spent 472 days as a captive sex toy for another serial rapist. Then Flora disappears in the middle of DD's investigation, and DD has to figure out what has happened. Gardner does a great job dropping subtle hints about the kidnapping while also providing Flora's backstory. The best one so far, but not for wimps. 4.5 stars. ( )
