Hungover aristocrat Edward "Charlie" Decharles awakens in the back of a steam-cab, only to discover that the driver has been murdered. Unused to feeling responsible for anything, he feels compelled to find the killer. As he investigates, he meets "The Amazing" Gladys Dunchurch, a stage magician's assistant whose employer has disappeared - and not in a good way. They form an alliance - Charlie will help Gladys with his considerable resources and Gladys will help Charlie with her even more considerable brains. Soon they discover that their respective mysteries are not only connected to each other, but related to other seemingly unrelated strangeness transpiring in London - the murder of an astronomer, an attack on a patent medicine factory, a mysterious cult in an idyllic town, and reports of deadly creatures in the London sewers. Charlie and Gladys find themselves pitted against dead-eyed assassins, murderous pirates, wingless flying machines, and perhaps even creatures from beyond this Earth. And lurking behind it all lies a sinister cabal that knows the secret origin of the steam-powered society that powers their world. Can our heroes save the day, or will the fallout from that secret destroy two worlds? Champagne Charlie and the Amazing Gladys is a fun, witty Steampunk adventure yarn, featuring a cast of eccentric characters.… (más)

Champagne Charlie and the Amazing Gladys was an intriguing book set in what seemed like Victorian England (or there-abouts) with a strong element of steampunk and magic. It was evident Hilton had studied the time period as their descriptions and settings were very detailed. I found it fascinating - and the story moved along quickly. It all seemed very real! ( )

A few typos but it was a good read. The chapters were short and probably could have benefitted from combining them to make thirty chapters instead of sixty. There are a LOT of characters that are important to the storyline and it can be easy to lose track of who's who. The story leaves it open for more books to come.

I was surprised to learn about a possible relationship (that could be examined more in a future book). It wasn't hinted at all in the story, but it was a nice little twist.

It would be nice for a prequel or two about the moonbat religion and the space beaver technology. When the book starts, these elements are already in play and it would benefit from a bit of background.

For non-Brits, a glossary would be helpful.

Otherwise, it was action-packed and I wanted to keep reading most of the time. Mostly, I was slowed by my laptop dying and needing charging because I was too busy reading and not paying attention to my battery. ( )

This was a fun adventure that manages to stay intimate despite the otherworldly (literally) plot line. I love the absurdity of bats and beavers and other creatures that live on the other planets of the solar system. I also really liked the cast of characters. Charlie and Gladys and Michael and Tom are all appealing, as well as the older characters with their history and experience. ( )

Charlie is a bit of a dolt. A rich young man with a good heart, but not all that bright. When a steam cab driver is murdered outside his house he feels bad and decides to investigate. Along the way he falls in with clever, beautiful magician’s assistant Gladys, an Australian come to London to make her fortune on the stage. Her employer, the magician, has gone missing, and it doesn’t seem to be one of his regular benders. There are giant bats on the moon (and in the sewers), human-sized beavers impersonating humans, all kinds of steam-punk trappings, an admiral, pirates, a dashing aviator, etc., etc. It’s all supposed to be great fun, but it’s a bit overblown and awfully busy. Keeping track of the many, many plots and characters was a challenge. I liked Gladys, who takes no shit, and also Charlie’s aristocratic mother, who has a mysterious past. Charlie was charming enough. Some of the other characters rather ran together. On the whole, I enjoyed it well enough, though. Reviewed from an advance eBook copy received through the LibraryThing Early Reviewer Program in return for an honest review.

Charlie is looking for who killed the steam cab driver. Gladys is looking for her partner in a magic show. (Women are not allowed to do magic by themselves. She and Charley team up; they'll help each other.

Library Thing and Odyssey Books let me read this book for review (thank you). It has been published so you can grab a copy now.

I like steampunk novels. They make wonderful inventions. However this story is a cross between steampunk and science fiction. That doesn't make it bad, it just makes your mind stretch further...

There are other creatures living in space. The animals are human sized and they intend to take over the earth and wipe the humans out. However the humans are aware they are there and one crazy professor intends to take the moon out by explosives. And Gladys and Charlie end up in the middle of this.

Will they find the answers they are looking for? How can they stop the destruction planned?

There is a lot going on and it keeps your attention. I'm glad we don't have those monsters here... ( )
