It was an OK read, a mix of virology and quantum physics that barely skimmed the surface of the science. I thought the references to Schrodinger's Cat were interesting. To quote a physicist at the University of Texas, "The cat ends up both dead and alive at the same time. Because the existence of a cat that is both dead and alive at the same time is absurd and does not happen in the real world, this thought experiment shows that wave function collapses are not just driven by conscious observers." While the thought experiment was interesting, it really went nowhere in the context of the story. Neither did the virus that Matt was supposedly working on. The switching of Points-of-View between Emmett, Matt's wife and Plottner wasn't necessary.

The plot did propel the reader forward, however, to determine what was actually going on. I just would have liked to read a more in depth discussion of what Matt's research actually was, why it was important, what Sheena's contribution might have been (real or imagined), and why the Defense Dept and Plottner might actually care. ( )

One of his best! Emotional, intellectual, technological and well-written. ( )

Some people have implied that this was Sci-Fi, but really it was a police procedural mystery with a physics angle thrown in. I don't know the specifics of the theories well enough to say how accurate or feasible it is, but it was enough to explain what quantum entanglement is, and get my interest.

But these theories were only involved indirectly in the story; the real story involved people doing things that people always do, good, bad, or indifferent. And there were some interesting people. I'd love to see a follow-up story with more of them. One of the people that seem interesting is a rich guys security head, who rarely speaks. The only sentence I remember him saying was "I like it", which surprised everyone around, especially his boss. It seems like a lot of good lines, mostly short, were at the end of the book.

This was a fairly slow-moving book, but it was never boring. I'll certainly be reading more by this author.

I listened to the audible version of this, narrated by Lara Jennings and Christopher Lane. They did a good job, and having the male female voices helped a lot. ( )

Happily, this is my first Brad Parks books and I was so pleased with the pace of the book and his clever twists in the story as well as the intriguing nature of the subject matter. Great characters with their "special abilities"---especially Brigid as a young woman who was hard of hearing, and Emmett...a widowed datective...a man with understanding in part based on age and loss. ( )

I didn't find this book to be very interesting. Never found a point where it grabbed my attention or left me on the edge of my seat. There was never a time I thought I wanted to stop reading it, just was always waiting for that big moment that never came. I found the wife to a weak person. The police officer working the case seemed to let everybody and their mother get deeply involved in the case, what kind of police officer does that. Although I will say the police officer was the one person that I found to have some emotional attachment to. Everyone else, eh. ( )
