Andy Carpenter and his golden retriever, Tara, are finding that all is not calm or bright in Silent Bite, the latest Christmas mystery in this heartwarming series from bestselling author David Rosenfelt.

Lawyer Andy Carpenter can finally take a breath; he's back on dry land after a family Caribbean cruise forced on him by his wife, Laurie, to get into the Christmas spirit. Of course the family's first stop is to the Tara Foundation, the dog rescue organization that has always been Andy's true passion.

But when Andy arrives, his partner, Willie Miller, needs his help. Willie's old cellmate, Glenn Anson, has been arrested for murder. Andy doesn't necessarily believe in Glenn, but Willie does. And Andy believes in Willie, which is why Andy decides to take the case.

Once again David Rosenfelt puts listeners in the Christmas spirit in a tale that is equal parts mystery and holiday cheer.

Okay, Rosenfeld IS hilarious at the same time as he's laying out a pretty decent crime procedural & this IS a worthwhile and entertaining read.
I had to knock the rating down though on a few counts:
1. is that these novels are getting really formulaic... I don't want to get into spoiler territory by being too specific about this... if you've read a good number of this series you know what I mean.
2. Is when you write crime/court/police procedural novels, you need to know the important details, and he apparently hasn't. One of the few plot errors in this book [& others] is After writing 20-something such novels, STILL not knowing the difference between a pistol and a revolver. To be specific, revolvers do NOT leave a shell casing at the scene!! This is important during a trial in which a revolver is a crucial piece of evidence.
3. When a writer does goof as above, there's supposed to be something called an editor involved that should catch and correct such. How do these guys stay employed? ( )

While Rosenfelt's stories are always entertaining, this wasn't a Christmas story, nor was it a dog story, which made it disappointing. ( )

Andy #22 isn't really a Christmas nor a dog story. Silent Bite follows the same format- Andy, a semi retired lawyer ends up defending an ex-convict with help from amusing cast of characters. ( )

Well, this wasn’t the Christmas story/fun Andy Carpenter mystery I was expecting. Other than Andy complaining about how sick he was of Christmas music this had no holiday tie-in at all. Not only that, but the mystery itself was clunky and the bulk of the story was spent trailing an obvious red herring. I’ve enjoyed reading several of the earlier books in this series but this one just felt tired. ( )

If there is one thing that Andy can’t do, it’s turn his back on a friend or a dog, not necessarily in that order. When Willie asks him to defend Tony, a former cellmate, Andy can’t say no. It looks like the guy is being framed for murder, and while Andy may not be convinced, Willie is, and that is good enough for Andy to take the case. Besides, Tony has a dog he obviously loves, and that tips the scale in his favor. It’s an exciting read, with plenty of mystery and murders galore. Andy and his team will definitely have to bring their A game to the table to win this one. Filled with all the wit and wonder we’ve come to expect from David Rosenfelt, this book is a winner. ( )
