In a barren landscape an empire is about to rise and an epic struggle is about to unfold. Sticks and Stones illuminates this earth-shaking tale without a single word. Here, Peter Kuper has created a picture story of epic proportions. It is an intricate story of birth and death, war and peace, artfully told without a single word. It chronicles the rise of an empire and the consequences of hubris. This silent tale is both a perfect book for children and a potent political commentary for parents. Sparse, thought-provoking and beautiful, Kuper is a master of the genre.… (más)

Sticks and Stones by Peter Kuper is a wordless graphic novel about a war between the stone people and the stick people. It is about the rise and fall of powerful empires and the dangers of power.

It begins with a volcano and a stone giant who in turn finds or creates a stone village. They built a castle for the stone giant and he becomes their ruler. Things reach an uneasy quietude until a new village of people are discovered — this time stick people.

War it seems is inevitable. Maybe it is the birth from the volcano thing. Maybe it's the imbalance of power between the armored stones and the hunter gatherer sticks.

In the end though, it's not the conquering empire that is the great equalizer. It is nature herself who giveth and taketh away. With death and destruction comes renewal. Whether or not it also brings redemption for the survivors, is left to the reader's imagination and interpretation. ( )

I would rather read Blood Song or Dogs and Water

I think most reviewer's enthusiasm exceeds my own in this. However, I still found it a good quick viewing for the bathroom. The majority of this book is a black and grey blocky rocky picto-story of a giant stone creature which orders the building of a castle, and the dominance of a colorful small neighbouring tree people. This message is a little too obvious and simple both in delivery and style for my liking. Some may enjoy Sticks more, but I was left dissatisfied in the end. ( )

This is a graphic novel in the true essence of the phrase - there are no words. It is set in a very early civilisation I guess where words were not used, so the pictures really have to captivate well the meaning and thoughts behind the action; this book somehow manages to capture this incredibly well.

The downside of this book for me is that you can read it in fifteen minutes while standing in the bookshop. It really isn't one to buy unless you are truely passionate about the art and the story; which unfortunately, I am not. ( )
