En 1944, Mathilde, una joven alsaciana, se enamora de Amín Belhach, combatiente marroquí en el ejército francés durante la II Guerra Mundial. Tras la Liberación, el matrimonio viaja a Marruecos y se establece en Meknés, ciudad en la zona del Protectorado de Francia con una importante presencia de militares y colonos.
