"This book undid me in all the best ways. Everything is an Emergency is a brilliant, honest, necessary book that exposes the intricacies of the human brain while showing us the way creativity and friendship can anchor us. This is a must-read for anyone who has ever wondered if they see the world a little differently." â??Ada Limón

A New Yorker cartoonist illustrates his lifelong struggle with OCD

Jason Adam Katzenstein is just trying to live his life, but he keeps getting sidetracked by his over-active, anxious brain. Mundane events like shaking hands or sharing a drink snowball into absolute catastrophes. Jason has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, a mental illness that compels him to perform rituals in order to protect himself from dangers that don't really exist. He checks, washes, over-thinks, rinse, repeat.

He does his best to hide his embarrassing compulsions, and sometimes this even works. He grows up, worries about his first kiss, falls in love with making cartoons, moves to New York City â?? which is magical and gross, etc. All the while, half his energy goes into living his life, while the other half is devoted to the increasingly ridiculous rituals he's decided to maintain to keep himself from fully short-circuiting,

Then, he fully short-circuits.

At his absolute lowest, Jason finally decides to do the things he's always been told to do to get better: exposure therapy and medication. These are the things that have always freaked him out, and they continue to freak him out. Also, they help him recover.

Everything is an Emergency is about all the self-destructive stories someone tells himself, over and over, until they start to seem true. In images surreal, witty, and confessional, Jason shows us that OCD can be funny, even when it feels like it's ruining your li… (más)

A couple people in my life suffer from OCD, so this pretty familiar territory for me. Katzenstein does a good job of outlining his lifelong struggles with plenty of candor and humor, but breezes along a bit too quickly and stays so much in his own head that the other people in his life are mentioned almost in passing. (Ironically and hopefully intentionally, one of his illustrations in the book meant to to criticize movies has an artist monologuing about his tortured existence, while his model off to the side smiles, stares off into space and declares, "I have no inner life of my own.") An OCD graphic memoir that's equal parts harrowing and humorous.

(Full disclosure: I received a free e-ARC for review through Netgalley. Content warning for mental health issues.)

Jason Adam Katzenstein is just a kid when he starts developing irrational fears. It begins with a creepy statue in his grandparents' house; then he starts having nightmares about the Man with Red Eyes from A Wrinkle in Time. Next come the compulsions, such as the need to pick up every. single. piece. of. litter., in an attempt to boost his karmic points, a la The Good Place. These are closely followed by obsessions: with cleanliness and contamination and, later, feelings centered around guilt, panic, and relationships.

Everything Is an Emergency: An OCD Story in Words & Pictures is a graphic memoir outlining Jason's journey. As his OCD continues to escalate, his parents get divorced (it's his child development specialist, Mary, who breaks the news). He experiences aggressive outbursts and fights with his stepdad; turns to dieting and exercise as a means of controlling something, anything in his life; discovers the transformative power of art; goes to college, makes friends, falls in love. Along the way, another therapist diagnoses Jason with OCD. But it's not until he hits his rock bottom that he's able to undertake the difficult work of getting better: both by going on meds, which could affect his work, and by confronting and neutralizing his fears through Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), a form of Cognitive-Behavioral therapy (CBT).

Everything Is an Emergency hit me smack dab in the feels. Though I don't have OCD, I have struggled with social anxiety for as long as I can remember, and found so many of these panels relatable on a visceral level. The CBT/ERP scenes are especially agonizing, since I've been living my own version of this for the past three and a half years. But it's also counterbalanced by Jason's delightfully dark sense of humor, conveyed masterfully through his artwork.

This is a memoir told in text and loads of fantastic illustrations. It's a quick read, and I finished it with a little more understanding and empathy for those with OCD and panic. Due to some R-rated language (hey, sometimes that's the most fitting word for a particular situation, I'm not judging) and some references to recreational drug use, I think it's best suited for more mature readers -- I suspect the intended audience is in the older teen to adult range.

People with OCD might see themselves in this book, or not -- while mental illness has some commonalities, it can also be experienced uniquely. I'm proud of the author for continuing to fight for his health and also share his story with us. In doing so, it helps others in their own journey and it helps eliminate the stigma. Ain't nobody got time for stigma.

Thanks to Megan at Harper Perennial for sending me an ARC! Pub date June 30, 2020. ( )
