Alice is determined to find out why the apartment was abandoned and why her grandmother never once mentioned the family she left behind when she moved to America after World War II. With the help of Paul, a charming Parisian student, she sets out to uncover the truth. However, the more time she spends digging through the mysteries of the past, the more she realizes there are secrets in the present that her family is still refusing to talk about.

Sixteen-year-old Adalyn doesn't recognize Paris anymore. Everywhere she looks, there are Nazis, and every day brings a new horror of life under the Occupation. When she meets Luc, the dashing and enigmatic leader of a resistance group, Adalyn feels she finally has a chance to fight back.

But keeping up the appearance of being a much-admired socialite while working to undermine the Nazis is more complicated than she could have imagined. As the war goes on, Adalyn finds herself having to make more and more compromisesâ??to her safety, to her reputation, and to her relationships with the people she loves the m… (más)

Slow to start for me, but once I got halfway through, I couldn’t put the book down! ( )

CW: Mother suffers from depression and has attempted suicide, war crimes

This WWII story is about Alice trying to uncover the mystery of why her grandmother left her an apartment in France in her will. She has uncovered the journal of Adalyn (her great-aunt) and tries to piece together why the apartment was abandoned after the war. The story is told in alternating narrative between Alice and Adalyn. I enjoyed Adalyn's voice more as her actions drove the plot forward. A couple of the characters had some mental health issues which, in my opinion, didn't seem to fit into the story. I feel like this was included in to add depth, but too me it felt superfluous as the main story-line was sufficiently engaging. That being said, I felt even this could have been fleshed out a bit and more tension added. At no point did I feel like I was on the edge of my seat as I have been in similar stories. Just an okay book for me. ( )

This book drew me in from the very beginning and didn’t let go! Alice’s grandmother passes away, leaving an old apartment in Paris to her. The thing is that no one knew Alice’s grandmother had this apartment and that’s just the beginning of the secrets. As Alice explores the apartment, she finds out that her grandmother had a sister that no one knew about and that sister had her own secrets, including being a part of the French resistance and spying. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time reading this and I couldn’t put it down. Highly recommend this book. ( )

Like many YA novels, ""The Paper Girl of Paris combined historical fiction with a present-day narrative. Sixteen-year-old Alice is trying to decipher the mystery surrounding her grandmother and her great aunt Adalyn after discovering her journal. Adalyn's story gave the reader an insight into her life as a resistance fighter and Nazi spy. The two timelines didn't always run parallel. The reader knew Adalyn's story before Alice did, thanks to Adalyn's point of view which was fascinating. Alice, on the other hand only had Adalyn's diary. The most touching part of Adalyn's story was her bond with her younger sister (Alice's grandmother). It was so sad that Adalyn couldn't tell her the truth about the role she was playing in thwarting the Germans.

Like most novels written using two timelines, I found the historical one far more intense and interesting. The risks Adalyn took were nail-biting and I was constantly afraid she was going to get caught. Alice's story, in comparison, was fairly bland and I don't think her mother's mental health issues were necessary or handled well. However, I did like Paul who helped Alice with her sleuthing, and all the places the two teenagers visited brought back memories of my own time spent in that beautiful city.

The ending was heartbreaking and I was in tears. I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed "The Paper Girl of Paris". The writing was lovely, the characters interesting (especially the historical ones) and the storyline was compelling. A wonderful read. ( )

The historical fiction part of the novel was much stronger and more interesting than the contemporary story. ( )
