American author Dianne White joins forces with Australian/Italian illustrator Felicita Sala in this lovely picture-book examination of colors, the seasons, and the life of a family where a new baby is expected. As the poetic text describes the colors of each of the four seasons, the artwork expands upon the story, depicting a young boy and his family and friends throughout the year. It soon becomes apparent that the boy's mother is pregnant, and the artwork follows this development, until the happy conclusion, in which a new member of the family is welcomed into the world...

I found Green on Green immensely appealing, from both a narrative and aesthetic perspective, and thought that with White's poetic text in rhyme and Sala's gorgeous artwork, it would make a wonderful read-aloud selection. I enjoyed the exploration of color and season in the natural world, and how this was paralleled by/paired with the entirely visual narrative about the mother's pregnancy. I also appreciated the diversity of characters here, and that this beautiful brown-skinned family is depicted as having friends of all kinds. In short: a lovely book, one I am glad to have picked up. It addresses a fairly common theme in picture-books - the arrival of a new sibling - in a unique and creative way. Recommended to picture-book readers looking for stories about the seasons, about colors, and most of all, about new arrivals in the family circle. ( )
