First off - I LOVED this book!
“Somewhere in Flanders” is based on a true Canadian story of a newly enlisted young soldier, James Johnstone. As WW1 erupted, young Johnstone quickly enlisted and was all too soon on his way, with so many others, to fight the war overseas; not really understanding what they were about to experience.
Johnstone began writing letters home to his girlfriend early on, and through his letters we come to know Johnstone and the overwhelming brutality and misery of war. Though not written in full graphic detail - thankfully - James letters clearly show the triumphs, struggles, traumas and miseries experienced in war.
My grandfather also served in WW1; so “Somewhere in Flanders” allows me a glimpse into my own grandfather’s service in the military experiences of the time.
Heather McBriarty’s “Somewhere in Flanders” is a fantastic read and I couldn’t put it down! Another sign of a great book - to me- is that it has now been put onto my “read again” shelf - a spot reserved for only my favourites!
