The action is smooth and continuous, the characters somewhat interesting but not quite compelling, and the plot usually baroque and otherworldly. Tim Powers has often moved his characters through a Los Angeles that feels so real to me I'm riding shotgun or smelling the hill cover. Not this one, where it becomes a list of street names and freeway numbers, mostly familiar, but not necessarily evocative. (
