2964 Lord Grey of the Reform Bill: Being the Life of Charles, Second Earl Grey Second Edition, by George Macaulay Trevelyan (read 15 Mar 1987) The author is the great-nephew of Thomas Babington Macaulay, and was born in 1876. This is a masterful biography of Charles, Second Earl Grey, and was published in 1920 but I read the 2nd Edition, which was published in 1929. Grey was born March 13, 1764, at Fallodon, and died July 17, 1845. He was prime minister in 1832 when the Reform Bill was passed. This is a very fine work and tells the story of the enactment of the Reform bill in clear and exciting fashion. Grey was in parliament from early days, but went to the House of Lords in 1807 when his father died. He was a prominent Whig leader and friend of Fox, but his principal achievement was getting the Reform Bill passed This book is well-written and makes me want to read more by Trevelyan. ( )
