Its a nice bit of fluff but the pacing is uneven and everything was just so damn predictable. Also making Jett a brown boy seemed like tokenism and it loses marks for all the pop culture references. Still, the plot is cute enough and while not meaty, there's enough to carry the story and the characterization of major players is solid. Given this is the author's debut novel, I would read future efforts. ( )

This had a great premise and is the second book of late that I have read that wants to give some voice to unsung women in history. Kit channels more than just the well know Joan of Arc when she replaces her brother during a jousting tournament, a position only held by males at the Castle, a medieval themed restaurant. The story felt very familiar, but was still a good diversion. ( )

I'm having a difficult time starting this review, but lets start with... I liked it. I did! This book isn't perfect, but it's quirky and enjoyable and I'm always here for a story where characters are taking on a flaw in a greater institution. There were some aspect this this one that were a little tropey (best friends to lovers romance, anyone?) but there were also some unique moments.

I liked the raw reality shown of Kit's environment - her family is very poor, and Pacton shows it. I think my absolute favorite part was the easy inclusivity of the entire cast. It's something I've never seen before, and it's something that should be a no-brainer. We are made in all styles, and fiction should reflect that. And the characters are flawed. Kit, for example, is not a passionate feminist so much as she sees a flaw in the world that is bullshit, and wants to address it. For selfish reasons. And non-selfish reasons. It goes both ways.

The plot had me hooked at the beginning, but fizzled out at the end with the speed and ease of resolution. For a book that had previously done so well at letting its world feel messy and real, the ending was more of a fairytale (in my opinion) and so lost some major points with me.

THE LIFE AND (MEDIEVAL) TIMES OF KIT SWEETLY is a great, quick read with characters who are interesting, a world that mostly feels tangible, and a quest that feels all too relatable in so many ways. It was good as a whole, and I recommend it!

So stinking cute! I grew up in the region and we LOVED going to Medieval Times in Chicago, Illinois -this young adult feminist, coming of age, romance is set in the same location! Careful never to actually call it medieval times, the book is still obviously centered around the same thing. Jousting, serving wenches, knights, broadswords - the whole kit and caboodle. Kit has worked in the castle for three years with her friends and family. Her older brother is a knight, her Uncle is the king (manager) and her two best friends are also there. She loves everything about it.... except that girls can't try to be knights - it's only for men. The only place up from serving wench is princess. Kit knows she is just as good as the knights - she's been practicing with her brother for years! During one of the shows, her brother lets her ride out in his place (helmet on) and she rocks the night - even becoming the champion. When she rips off the helmet and reveals she is a girl she becomes a viral sensation. But just because she's having a moment in the spotlight doesn't mean things are easy. Their electricity is turned off at home, she has a crush on her best friend, she's unsure how she'll pay for college, and she just wants to take care of her mom. A wonderful, witty, fun, and feminist read. Loved it. ( )

This book was so fun!! It was geeky and feminist and funny and honestly what more could I even ask for in a book??
Also, even though it should be the standard, I really appreciated that while this book was very much a story of a cis girl challenging the cis guys, it actually like . . . recognized that and admitted that there was more nuance to it than that, and like damn all books should do that but most just . . . don't.
