Leonid McGill's spent a lifetime building his reputation as a private investigator in New York. His seemingly infallible instincts and inside knowledge of the crime world make him the ideal man to help when Phillip "Catfish" Worry comes knocking. Catfish is a ninety-four-year-old Mississippi blues-man who needs Leonid's help with a simple task: deliver a letter revealing the black lineage of a wealthy heiress and her corrupt father. The opportunity to do a simple favor while shocking the prevailing elite is impossible for Leonid to resist. But when a famed and feared assassin puts out a hit on Catfish, Leonid has no choice but to confront the ghost of his own felonious past. Working to protect his client, and his own family, Leonid needs to reach the heiress on the eve of her wedding before her powerful father kills those who hold their family's secret. A very quick Leonid McGill story with a few more quicker summaries of other cases thrown in too. I’ve only read the 2nd book and this one and it was an easy narrative to follow as Mosley catches the reader up when needed with a quick little narrative by McGill.

In this case a simple letter needs to be delivered, but McGill will face hit men, old rivalries, and race will be a major part of the story.

At 160 pages with a half sized hardback book, it was a great weekend read. I enjoy the McGill character. ( )

The characters are vivid, the dialog is taut, and the language is smart and evocative, but the tone of this book just didn't sit well with me. So much macho posturing. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for this. ( )

I really enjoyed this book. It had been a while since I've ready anything Walbyter Mosley, and I'm going to fix that! This is a short book, and it's fast paced. P.I. Leonid McGill is known in both the investigating world and the criminal world, having straddled both. He has connections and gets things done. Phillip "Catfish" Worry comes to him asking him to get a letter to his granddaughter. His son was a result of a relationship Catfish had with a wealthy white woman in his youth. They knew their relationship could go nowhere and that they had to separate. His son looked white and although his girl friend (already forgot her name) came home shamed, unwed with a child, he was raised white. Years later Catfish had one contact with his girl friend before she dies and she asked him to give a letter to their grandchild when the time was right. Their son has grown up to be wealthy, privileged and racist. The time is right, Catfish's granddaughter is about to be married, and when Catfish approached his son, he was threatened and when McGill joins the team, the threats and danger escalate. Good, quick read. ( )
