It's essentially a contemporary boarding school setting, though there's a small touch of the fantastical in it near the end as well. For me, reading this as an adult, the resolution played out exactly the way I expected it to go, but it was still fun even though I wasn't surprised by the turn of events. Younger readers might have a different experience. I've always enjoyed Faith Erin Hicks's artwork, so this was a pleasure to look at visually in addition to enjoying the story part of the graphic novel. ( ) Teen-aged Juniper arrives at Ellsmere, a prestigious all-girls boarding school, in a taxi but via a first-ever scholarship to an institution that is usually populated by rich and often legacy students. While she soon finds an ally in her roommate Cassie, she is almost just as quickly met by a foe in Emily, who looks down her nose at a former public school student. I really wanted to like this book and it had some promise at first. Juniper and Cassie are likely characters, with a realistic mix of confidence and insecurity, talent and ineptitude, and caring and apathy. On the other hand, Emily is pretty one-dimensional and her two friends/lackeys are so nondescript that I’m pretty sure they were never even given names. The story itself is almost all typical school fare -- worrying about grades, making friends, etc. There is almost out of nowhere a bit of magical realism that feels completely out of place with the rest of the tone. All in all though, the story ends up being rather slight and the ending feels a bit abrupt -- although clearly there is much left open for a future title. That’s all well and good, but I felt like a book that is partially titled “One Year” should feel like more than a handful of episodic moments. The illustrations are quite eye-catching and capture a lot of emotion. The main cast of characters are all white and able-bodied; there are some background and minor characters who are people of color, but they aren’t named characters. So the book could definitely do with some more diversity. It’s not a bad read -- and it’s a quick one -- but I was left wishing for something meatier. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
