Christian Nonfiction. Health & Fitness. Religion & Spirituality. Nonfiction. What would you be willing to give up to gain the presence of God in your life again? Many of us sign up for a physical detox program, thinking that if our bodies are healthier, then we're healthier. But a healthy body doesn't do us a lot of good if we are spiritually malnourished. Welcome to the 40-Day Sugar Fast, a fast that begins with us giving Jesus our sugar and ends with Jesus giving us himself-the only thing that can ever truly satisfy our soul's deep hunger. On this 40-day journey you'll learn how to stop fixating on food and other things you use to fill the voids in life and instead fix your eyes on Christ. Anyone who runs to sugar for comfort or a reward, who eats mindlessly or out of boredom, who feels physically and spiritually lethargic, or who struggles with self-control will discover here not only freedom from their cravings but an entirely new appetite for the good things God has for us.… (más)

Would you give up sugar to experience the sweet presence of God in your life?
Stop fixating on food and fix your eyes on Jesus:)

I found the inspirational and devotional aspect of this book good, but I wasn't particularly motivated to do a sugar fast. I am sure it was just the place that I am at the moment, what with the Covid-19 stuff going on and being quarantined at home. I like the Christian take on the book, although I do suspect the author is someone who has never struggled with weight issues or emotional issues that feed into the desire to consume too much sugar. The One we worship on Sunday must remain Lord over our lives Monday through Saturday. (p. 30)

Are we using other things to satisfy a longing when God is truly the answer? Are we turning to sugar, other foods, or even worldly distractions to satisfy those longings? The title of this book implies that this book deals totally on a sugar fast but The 40-Day Sugar Fast goes much deeper than that. Yes, sugar and sweets can be an addiction but author Wendy Speake shows us that sugar is just one of many things that we often expect will satisfy. What we really need, however, is a total reliance on Jesus Christ to fulfill our needs.

As you take part in this sugar fast, you will find yourself feeling better physically and stronger spiritually. Speake shares motivational thoughts, Bible scripture, and suggested prayers as she walks us through this 40 day fast and, on page 52, she reminds us that "Each day, as you go to HIm rather than to food, the Spirit of God gives you strength that those empty calories never could!"

So, if you want to become healthier in both body and spirit, you will certainly benefit from reading and following The 40-Day Sugar Fast.

I received a copy of this book from Baker Books and was under no obligation to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts. ( )
