Jill Kemerer is an author I can count on to give me heartfelt, small town reads. Her Cowboy Till Christmas jump starts her Wyoming Sweethearts series and is everything I expected wrapped up in some holiday cheer. Mason and Brittany have a history. One that Mason has done his best to forget but as a widower who is missing someone to share life with and a three-year-old to care for, the last thing he needs is the surprise Brittany shows up on his doorstep with. I loved the message of this story—that our identity is not found in our successes, failures, jobs, or works and sometimes it’s time to let go of chasing a dream in order to let another one in. Kemerer introduces some side characters I’m hoping get to step into the spotlight in this series. This is definitely a feel-good read that will put you in the holiday spirit. This was my first book of Kemerer’s to read, but her tenth (10th) with the Love Inspired line by Harlequin. This also serves as the first in the #WyomingSweethearts series.
“Her Cowboy Till Christmas” is a holiday/Christmas read that takes place in the small town of Rendezvous, Wyoming.
At the center of this story of forgiveness, redemption, and second chances – is Brittany Green. She had once been involved with Mason Fanning back when they were kids. Now Mason is a widow and a single father to Noah.
Brittany shows up in Rendezvous for two reasons – to introduce Mason to Ryder, the twin brother he didn’t know about, and to check in on her grandma – “Nan”. She’s also thinking about moving her grandmother to California which bothers Mason. And, Brittany considers it more and more when she sees her Nan’s decline in several aspects of her life.
When Brittany shows up, Mason feels those old feelings for her, and she for him. But, he refuses to move forward despite it being three (3) years since Mia’s health-related death. And, he makes it clear to Brittany there is no room in his life for her. He wants to keep Mia’s memory alive.
Despite what he says, Mason can’t deny the feelings for the first girl who broke his heart. Brittany becomes torn between praying for the loan she needs to make her dreams come true out in California; and staying in Rendezvous where her dreams might be. She also hasn’t forgotten what her mother had said about the small town – it was a dream killer.
Mason’s journey is complicated – the arrival of Brittany, still reeling with the grief of losing his wife, along with finding the truth about his twin and their parents. In addition he is dealing with a complicated issue that no one knows about.
As with the usual Harlequin “story of the month” – this is a heart-warming story with a happy ending. The characters were realistically written, some to the point where I was in tears. Mason’s loss and conflict was gut-wrenching, and Brittany’s own conflict was heart-breaking.
Kemerer’s beautiful and vivid writing tugs at the heart and doesn’t let go. While there were parts (and characters) that were frustrating, I held out hope for the couple.
I read this in about two days, but I’d say closer to eight (8) hours as they were two “4-hour” readings. Definitely a quick weekend read. Short on time, but long on lasting memories. There were light “Christian” and faith tones throughout the book which I thoroughly enjoyed.
I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the other characters mentioned in this novel and am looking forward to the next books in the Wyoming Sweethearts series. ( )
